Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Optimism Clearing blue sky, A promise in bare branches. In winter, there are sunny days. In adulthood, childhood can return. - 365 Tao: Daily Meditations We left Kelaat Sraghna at the crack of 1pm in the rain. Hichem had suggested the night before that I get everything ready so we could leave by 9am. But this is Morocco and time is fluid. Actually, the real reason we left much later than we had planned was that Maryam & Hichem's poor little '85 Golf had been waiting to see the mechanic for quite some time, and the mechanic apparently wasn't able to [View Full Entry]

The main street in Rabat is near the hotel and is fun to walk up and down, though the city is so modern it's not too different from most American cities.
Rabat is an amazing city, I only wish I had more time to visit it. The Peace Corps is keeping us busy all day with training and such. We have to go through safety and PC policies and learn countless acronyms and names which sound very unpronouncable at first. I wish I had more exciting news, but for now it's mostly meetings in a windowless room just like in Philadelphia. They're interesting, but they're still meetings. Instead I'd like to leave you with some of my favorite parts of what we've been talking about. The cover of the PC Morocco Pre-Service [View Full Entry]

Salaams In a day or 2 Ill leave Rabat. Plan is to go to MEKNES , a small town just before Fes which is called the cultural heart of Morocco. From there onto to FES for a REAL taste of Moroccan Culture. Been to the Tunisian Consul and they assure me that I can get a VISA issued at the Airport. Now I have to find some cheap flights, since the border between Morocco and Algeria is seemingly closed. Today we left Casablanca and headed out to the Capital City - Rabat. We made a stop at the Mausoleum of the Moroccan kings and drove through the grounds of the Royal Palace. Then we continued on to Tangier (Tanger). The movie - Casablanca was played so we could see what parts where really filmed there. We stopped off in another city for lunch and then continued on. We drove past Cape Spartel which is the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediteranean. Most of the drive was along the Atlantic and in Tangier our hotel was across the street [View Full Entry]

A street scene inside the Rabat Medina
Haven't done a lot today. I've moved from Meknes to Rabat the capital of Morocco. Rabat looks like a very modern city and in many ways it is, but in fact it has a history of 2,500 years. Last nights hotel was a bit of a splurge - I spent 340 Dirhams - that's about 21 Pounds sterling. I went from the sublime to the ridiculous. One night in a 40 Dirham hovel, the next in a 340 Dirham hotel! But the more expensive hotel not only had decent sanitation but also a swimming pool! There was also a big banner [View Full Entry]
