Hi Everyone! So we've been here for a few days now, how many? It's easy to lose track of time in a way. We all keep forgetting what day it is. We're really happy staying here with Jeremy and Tewa and their family at the Djembe Hotel, we heartily recommend it! They are lovely lovely people, welcoming us into their home, bringing in excellent drum and dance teachers, taking us to interesting things, and cooking fantastic food! Its been a very rich and memorable time overall. I'll try to post some pictures here. We're trying to be very respectful with the camera, as some folks in the town would prefer not to be photographed, and not to be on the internet, so maybe not as many photos as we would like to. But we'll carry a ... read more

We've finally made it to Bamako and are settling in to a new space, languages, and yummy food. We had a really long trip here, but it was very cool. After a great send off by the Liskas and Colleen and friends, just two hours of sleep, we flew to Casablanca. We arrived in the morning knowing that we had around a 16 hour layover and that there are neat things to see in town, but not sure about how we were going to do that with our packs, or if it was realistic. We were pleasantly surprised, after some confusing chaos, mysterious lines, and half french conversations, that Royal Air Maroc was providing us with a shuttle bus to town, a room for the day, and food! Voila! How totally perfect. After some waiting (I ... read more

After crossing into the Malian side we drove for half an hour or so to a place where we have to go through customs. The people have been very nice so far waving at us as we pass through, I am loving it so far the people are so friendly and polite and have the most genuine smile, though at one checkpoint after the border the border guard was not impressed by the hordes of kids who ran to wave at us and chat while we are stopped and started shooing them away to no avail, finally he gave up and the kids had fun seeing us off. It is our cook group who have to prepare dinner for the night and we ended up with bulk food from the truck as we have no local ... read more

Happy Holidays! We are in the final stages of planning for a new adventure, a new continent, a new year. Next Friday Dec 21 we leave our beloved and comfy home in Davis for time with the Liska-Rockwell's and a farewell party in San Fransisco, then early early in the wee hours on Saturday we depart for Africa. We'll land briefly, but not momentarily in Casablanca, hopefully spending the day on the town before departing again later that night for Bamako, Mali. We plan to spend most of our trip in Bamako, the country's capital at the Djembe Hotel , chez nos ami Jeremy and his family. Kevin will study drumming in its home culture, and I will play the role of observer, participant, explorer. Who knows! Perhaps we will have encounters and adventures of the ... read more

Well, and interesting day if not exactly as expected. The day started off with what was supposed to be a two hour river cruise to see some crocodiles on the river Niger... However, the local chap running it decided that he could double his profits by cramming 14 of us into two litte fishing boats; i say boats, they were canoes the local fisherman (in crews of two) use. There were 8 of us in one boat, and 6 in the other (it should have been ' in each boat). Due to this the canoes were very low in the water and like me at Christmas... pretty tipsy! The going was therefore rather slow and so after an hour we still had an hour to go before getting to where the crocs were. As the chap ... read more

The way I see it, people do not usually come to Africa for the cities, they come to see the people, hear the music, enjoy the scenary and observe the wildlife. Having said that, we have decided that our time in the big cities is time for us to update the blog, go through our photos, do laundry, relax, and chill out away from the everyday rigours of the truck and group travel. We did not rush around seeing all there was to see in Bamako, we did, however manage to make it to the Maisons des Artisans, however trying to get there was an interesting taxi ride to say the least. The taxi driver had to ask several people for directions, and still it took us over an hour to get to where we wanted ... read more

I'll be honest, Bamako isn't a city I feel the need to go back and visit again. The main road is wide, decorated with Christmas lights at night, and there are some nice statues placed around the city (my favorite is the giant hippo with his mouth open), but the rest of the city is cramped, dirty, and hard to get around. Even the taxi drivers don't know where things are! Despite this, we ventured out for dinner because the guidebook listed a restaurant that has kora music on Thursday nights. Turns out it's closed during Ramadan. We asked our taxi driver if he knew of an inexpensive restaurant in the area, and he started talking about one called "Luxe" (does that sound inexpensive to you? We didn't think so either) We ended up at a ... read more

Our long awaited trip to Mali started off without a hitch, surprisingly. Of course, our Air Senegal International flight took off late, but that was to be expected. I must admit, I was a bit concerned about flying a "budget" (too bad that didn't reflect in the price of our ticket!) West African airline, but I was incredibly impressed with Air Senegal. We had lunch and a drink as soon as the seatbelt sign was switched off, and the hour and a half long trip went smoothly. Getting out of the airport and into the capital city of Bamako was a bit more difficult. I was in line behind two of my friends whose French isn't exactly the strongest, so I had to go and help translate the exchange between them and the customs officer. Turns ... read more
