Having lost her husband a number of years ago, Anne is a widow taking care of her 6 children: Nepiyala (Nepman), Mayeso (Immanuel), Cicilya, Amos, Senti and Hazitoni. To support her family and earn a living, Anne farms. Anne lives in a dilapidated house with a broken windows. Like most homes, it is constructed of unburnt bricks (mainly just dried dirt and water) and grass for its thatched roof. This means that the family experiences major leaks and a growing number of cracks during the rain season. The family's latrine fell so they must rely on the latrine of another family, creating an unhealthy environment. Anne shared with Habitat, "I'm not happy at all that my family do... read more

Heavy rains destroyed the family's house so they current reside with Pelepetuwa's oldest daughter who has 3 children. In addition, Pelepetuwa and one of her children are HIV positive and receive ARV medication from the government. Geo: -13.9808, 33.7721Were packed up and ready to go by the time John, Morphy's brother showed up to take us to the border with Malawi. He had grown up in Mufwe and knew most of the workers in the camp. Really interested in marketing himself in the transfer business.Get to the Zambian border and clear it with no problem. There was a breakdown in communication about who should drive over to the other side. Ended up with Bizwik drivi ng over to the Zambian side and taking us to clear customs. Here is where the problems happened and another rude awakening. We were told since we did not transit straight through Malawi, we were not eligible for the transit visa and would have to pay the regular visa of $75 each instead of the $50 each for ... read more

Geo: -13.9808, 33.7721Finished up our packing and were ready to head out. Called Uber to take us to the airport and were able to get to the airport in under 30 minutes!!United has a new check in procedure there. You self check in, get your boarding passes and luggage tags and then you go to the check in counter where they weigh your luggage and then you are checked in and ready to go through security.Right before we went to sleep on Monday, Robert checked the news and Lufthansa airlines was having to cancel flights because of a ground employees strike. On Monday they had cancelled 900 flights but our flights from San Francisco to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Johannesburg were still flying. Then to further complicate matters, there had been a security issue with the ... read more

Day 7 saw us arriving at a giant lake that takes up 80% of the country of Malawi. The lake is also called Lake Malawi and it is a fresh water lake with bilharzia in it lol. Apparently that nasty little parasite which is something like a worm that travels to your brain is only in the southern part of the lake where the water isn’t moving. That was according to our driver for our guide said sometimes its there sometimes its not. He seems to say things like that a lot. Either the wifi works or it doesn’t. Thanks for the info….But we were in the middle section of the lake and 4 of us decided to hire a boat that had some fishing gear and snorkel stuff and of course beer to head out ... read more

Lsst week teaching part 2 I'm trying to get everything finished before I leave. I'm providing a lunch for the main workers, the Landirani team from the office, and the staff of the school. Chicken, rice and nsima, cabbage, squash to drink, and an apple to finish. That will be on Tuesday, so Irene, the assistant librarian and I will go into Lumbadzi on Monday; hopefully I can take the truck. I have driven it before, but only on the dirt road, but it’s no bigger than my van. Thursday morning I'm up early so go and wait for the woodman. He passes each morning before 6am with the back of his bike piled high with sticks of firewood. Unfortunately Bear's friend Lion sees me and attacks my skirt, (I'm wearing a nightie with a long ... read more

Last week teaching Friday I came back from town squashed in the Landirani van with loads of shredded paper from the local secondary school. We got the briquette maker last week. I'm intending to make some briquettes with the Standard 7’s and get them to write it up. It all fits with the Sam's Village sustainability aspect. Apparently the kids may not be interested in the deforestation problem, but may be caught by the free fuel aspect. They can all have a free briquette, but after I'm gone someone else will have to carry on supervising the kids. We had à big spider in the chim (loo). Not just in the shack, but actually in the box. He ran down when I lifted the lid, but there's always the worry that he’ll run back up. It ... read more

Eighth week teaching Monday I went to M’bang’ombe school to deliver the wordcards I'd promised them. Then into the CBCC to take in some things I'd made. Passing the ball round and saying names, animals and food went very well, as did a little song. We tried out the animal puzzles I'd made and they were far too difficult: in fact one of the helpers couldn't do them, so I took them away to make them easier. I felt Ike Oscar Wilde, who'd spent a busy day on his poem; he spent the morning putting in a comma, and the afternoon taking it out. I spent yesterday afternoon cutting pictures into four pieces, and this afternoon, sticking them back together to make two-piece puzzles. Earlier I took the Standard 6 learners in groups. I only managed ... read more

On our way back from the airport on Saturday, there was an accident between a motorcyclist and a cyclist. We, (Shelby, Justin and I) were on bike taxis and we went back to make sure everyone was OK. The motorcyclist had cut his face and ear quite badly, the cyclist had a small cut on his leg. The bike had a buckled back wheel, the motorbike had some minor damage. Shelby took a photo of the motorcyclist’s face and sent it to the doctor at the local hospital, and we managed to persuade a passing car to take him to the hospital. He didn't want to go, he wanted to stay and argue about who was going to pay for the damage. The cyclist looked a bit chastened, but whether that was because he had caused ... read more
