I don't usually write about the days where we spend hours on the road. The scenery is always beautiful, and the towns we pass through are full of things to look at, but a lot of our time on the truck is spent sleeping, reading, listening to music or waiting for our next toilet stop, so there's never enough going on to justify me writing anything. Each driving day is much the same as the last. That all changed today. I don't know what time it was when the brakes slammed on and bags, bottles of water and people all flew forward in the back of the truck. I pulled my headphones out, and a child's high pitched cries replaced my music. It wasn't a continuous, steady sort of crying, but lots of cries released in ... read more

It was another long day of driving yesterday to Chitimba, where we finally got our first glimpse of Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa. It's the eighth largest lake in the world, and home to countless species of fish. I'd love to see the biggest lake in the world, because this one was really impressive, to the point that at first I automatically thought that we were driving by the sea before I realised that, miles away, I could make out the faint outline of the far shore. Lake Malawi is a source of income for the locals, with many of them catching and selling fish from the lake or else catering to the tourism trade and offering snorkelling excursions to see the diverse underwater life that thrives there. The water is clean and warm, ... read more

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and that the dreaded month of January has not proved too difficult. Sorry it has been so long since my last post, Malawian internet is both rare and pretty expensive so doing blogs and such like can take a long time. In fact everything in Malawi takes time, I spent a whole day on buses just get to a working ATM machine. I am also sorry if I have not replied to any of your messages. I have read them now and will reply soon. You know I appreciate them so. My New Year got off to a bit of a disastrous start, I managed to pick up some sort of food poisoning so my New Years Celebrations were spent, alone, in bed, with a bucket of vomit ... read more

These two days we traveled over 1,000 km along the Tanzam HIghway, finally crossing the border into Malawi in the afternoon of the second day. Here are some of the impressions from our travels: The Tanzam Highway is paved, but that doesn't necessarily mean smooth. This is Africa, after all. Some of the tar roads are worse than the gravel ones, full of potholes, bumpy patches, and construction underway. Our big orange truck took the worst of it, but it's passengers suffered through 'back massage' on most of the journey. It was tiring and after 10-12 hours on the road, what with all the stops along the way, we were well and truly tired at the end of each day. At one stop, we saw another overlander mobbed with touts six deep beside the truck windows ... read more

Hello from Malawi! It looks like about half of my photos uploaded but there are some good ones in there. In Victoria Falls, Zim(babwe) and in Livingstone, Zam(bia) I did a lion walk in a lion conservation center. In a 4 phase process they are increasing the lion population in Africa. Phase 1 which we participate is walking with the lion cubs which are age 6 months to 2 years. We provide a valuable revenue source for them. In phase 2 they are released into a 500 acre environment with minimal human contact but no natural predators. At age 5 they are released into a 1500 acre environment with natural predators. Their cubs born are totally wild. A lot of the money goes towards purchasing the land from the government so I was happy to play ... read more

5th August Day 9 Chitimba Beach, Malawi Kath and I decided to have a quiet day today as we were still recovering from the sangria night and the travels from the previous day…..we must be getting old!! Some of the group did the 36km round trip walk to Livingstonia Mission up in the hills but as it meant a 5am wake up it really didn’t appeal to us! Meanwhile some of the staff at the camp ground gave Freddy a bath inside and out…we’d managed to trapse a whole lot of mud inside back in the forest and it wasn’t pretty! We slept in past 8am…a treat after so many early mornings and had a leisurely morning chatting with the others who’d stayed behind and visiting the craft market stalls just outside the camp gates. We ... read more

May 18th I was really happy with my decision to sleep in the truck, it meant tht when everyone else had to wake up and leave their room or break down their tent, I could continue sleeping! We got on the road at a decent time and a couple hours down the highway we stopped and had some breakfast. This time it was eggs, tea and toast, yuuum! On the road we went after satisfying our stomachs, and we headed for the border. The drive was really nice with lots of hills and trees. We passed through village after village and waved at child after child. They just love seeing us mzungus (white people/foreigners), the kids scream and wave both hands and even the adults take part now and then. After a while we made it ... read more

My bus ride out of Zimbabwe is an excellent indicator of the sort of reception I will be getting in Malawi: a thoroughly warm one. I chat at length to my plump (why do I never seem to sit next to anyone petite) and friendly neighbour, as we speed along to the sounds of Abba and the omnipresent Shania Twain. Another guy who I chat to periodically throughout the 14 hour journey insists I join him for a beer when we arrive in Blantyre. As far as first impressions go, the Malawians do a damn good job. Poor Blantyre doesn't get given much of a chance. I arrive at almost midnight and am gone by 8am the next day; I have not come to Malawi to see its cities. I must however pass through one more, ... read more
