The Day in the Life of Malagasians Rural Malagasians are up before sunrise, no electricity and no running water but the daily chores begin. The women prepared rice and fruit for breakfast for her big family. Strong Malagasian coffee was always prepared using charcoal for the fires. The school children put their school uniforms on (dark blue for private schools light blue for public schools) and helped with the younger ones. They had to start walking early as there was no public transport and school started at 8.00am. The men were out amongst the rice, corn and other vegies, later to be joined by the ladies. The 13+ boys move the Zebu for fresh grass. They all took their long narrow sticks to control the cattle. Several 16-18 year old girls were tending to their babies ... read more

Monday 12 March – Back to Tana The airport of Antsiranana (Diego) was basic with simple facilities. After leaving our hotel at 6.30am we waited about an hour before boarding at 8.30am and arrived in Tana on time after the 1.75 hour flight with Air Madagascar. A different driver was waiting for us at the airport and drove us to Hotel Mellis, the 3rd time we had stayed there. It’s a great hotel and very central. We went to the markets to buy some avocado and fruit for a light lunch. It was fun bartering with stall holders who couldn’t speak English and we certainly couldn’t speak Malagasy or French. The market was packed as usual and one needed to watch for pick-pockets as they are rife in this city market place. We then decided to ... read more

Saturday 10 March – Ankarana Park This day was a day for the grey tsingy. We were going to the Tsingy de Ankarana. After only 30 minutes of driving we came to the entrance to the Park. As it was low season, the local people weren’t as geared up for tourists. We organised our lunch for when we returned but we knew we were the only ones to be eating as the locals don’t seem to have lunch and we were the only tourists around. Tsingy de Ankarana is a small version of the Tsingy de Bemaraha. This park in the north is on the national road to Antisirana and is easily accessible. The park also is home to three types of lemurs, and chameleons. The Ankarana Massif consists of a limestone shelf which imposes ... read more

Friday 9 March fly to Diego Suarez then drive to Ankarana I was very excited to be flying to the northern section of Madagascar. It is known for its unusual geological structures the tsingy rough. A 3.30am start was not exciting but all went smoothly with Rivo taking us to the airport. Fortunately, at that time of the morning the single lane road going to the airport was almost deserted unlike when we arrived it was bumper to bumper traffic for several kilometres. The flight to Diego Suarez was almost 2 hours. As soon as we exited the bag collection area, we spotted our name being held up by Eric our new guide. His driver was Ahmed who handled the 4x4 very well . . . . and the roads were atrocious, even worse than ... read more

Wednesday 7 March – leaving Isola and driving back to Fianarantsoa Saying goodbye and thankyou to our fantastic hosts at the Isola Ranch, we drove back across the green plateau on a beautiful day with clear blue skies. It wasn’t too hot either. We stopped after an hour drive for Rivo to have the tyres checked in one of the villages (Ihosy I think). Just out of town we stopped to photograph a large chameleon slowly crossing the road. I guess it was like seeing frilled neck lizards crossing Australian roads, but they are quicker. There was yet another market we stopped at, the Angoelego Markets. This is always an interesting cultural experience with each market a little different to the next. There was dried tobacco being sold by locals, which is something we hadn’t ... read more

Tuesday 6 March – Isolo National Park The weather was magnificent, with clear blue sky other than a couple of white fluffy clouds, as we left at 7.45am to pick up our guide and cook in the town (Ranohira). On the main intersection of the town was a bright red and yellow pub which was the colour of the Three Horses Beer company, a regular site in these villages. From time to time we saw staggering men on roads who had obviously had a bit too much THB or home-made rum. Our guide had very good English as he explained to whilst driving out to the entrance of the Park that when local Bara tribes people die they place their bodies in a temporary grave for 3 years. After that time the bones are cleaned and ... read more

iMonday 5 March – from Ranomafana to Isola including Anja Park, Ambalavao After a large breakfast we headed for the fascinating massive markets of Andoha Nasana. As soon as we arrived, after about an hour’s drive south, we could hear the screeching of pig. Several men on the side of the road had a pig on its side looking at his tongue. Apparently, the tongue can show if the pig is health or not. The one that was being examined was not, so he went back into the truck. We walked into the markets, first watching the large fenced area where all the local men, with their long sticks (which was the custom of this region for men to carry white wooden long sticks) were displaying their pigs and wanting to sell or buy them. We ... read more

Saturday 3 March – Ambositra and Ranomafana The city of Antsirabe is large and busy, with population numbers unknown because there has been no census since the 1990s. It could be 2 million?? It seemed that every 3rd lady was carrying a baby or looking after a toddler or 3 so who knows. I have read that the average number of children Malagasian women now have has dropped to 4.6! Before we left the city we visited a miniature bicycle and vehicle manufacturing place. A man showed us how the bicycles were made. Fascinating and very intricate. The wheels were made from aluminium cans, spokes from fishing line, tyres from plastic tubing, brake cable from wire etc. We were then taken into a room full of embroidery with cotton fabric from France and embroidery thread from ... read more

Thursday 1 March – Kirindy Forest and Avenue of the Baobab Today was going to be another highlight and one of the 2 main reasons for wanting to come to Madagascar, to see lemurs and other wildlife AND to see the Avenue of the Baobab. We left our hotel at 7.30am with Rivo. This was after a leisurely breakfast gazing out over the beach, watching all the little fishing boats gathering their daily catch. The fresh seafood is lovely in the west. Driving back through the town, turning left, we hit the dirt road. We had over 2 hours to drive over big road undulations, potholes and varying sizes of water in puddles and across the road. Some were quite deep but the AWD Hyundai and Rivo’s driving worked well together. You wouldn’t go on the ... read more

Wednesday 28 February – drive from Antsirabe to Morondava Today was going to be another driving day but longer – around 500kms. After breakfast and checking out of the Hotel Royal Palace. On the edge of the city, as we drove out, we saw the only beer factory in Madagascar. It was the Three Heads Beer factory which was founded in 1956. Beer is very cheap (in our terms) in Madagascar – just over $1.00 AUD for 650mls. You can buy it from a shop for 1000 Ar ($0.45 AUD for 650 mls). We then completed our drive through the city then continued along the productive, volcanic valley for about an hour. We saw extensive erosion and mud slides and saw the destruction of a cyclone which hit the Island 6 weeks earlier. Rivers had washed ... read more
