Blogs from Kenya, Africa - page 2
This is Africa. A place where a lot of our patients are HIV positive, where medical supplies and facilities are limited , and where we have blackouts almost every other night, but yet I have found the people here to be incredibly welcoming and unbelievably strong. At St. Joseph's Mission Hospital I have had the opportunity to witness all these things as a volunteer through Medics to Africa. For two months now I have lived in a rural town in Kenya, Migori, and have had the most amazing and unique experience of my life so far. Overall, I have been able to do so much more than I would have dreamed of doing in the US. Yes okay, the ward rounds are pretty boring usually since I don't actually know how to treat patients, but I ... read more
We only allocated one week of our itinerary toKenya, and the Kenyans seemed a bit insulted by this. We were told that most visitors toKenyawould divide their time betweenNairobi,Mount KenyaNational Park, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, andMombasaon the coast. Our itinerary merely had us spending one night inNairobi(at the beautifulFairviewhotel, called an “oasis in the middle ofNairobi” for a reason) before being picked up for a 5-day trek upMount Kenya. Our reasoning was that we had already seen landscape and wildlife very similar to what could be found in Maasai Mara in the Serengeti, and that coastalKenyawas supposed to be very similar toZanzibar, where we had spent a week. This being said, I would love to go back and spend some more time inNairobi. We had been warned that this was one of the most dangerous ... read more
a Sudanese man, a Kenyan man and an Ethiopian man go to a hotel...
Published: March 3rd 2012Africa » Kenya » Nairobi Province » NairobiThursday morning armed guards entered the hotel with the biggest guns I have ever seen, it sent shivers down my spine at first - then I thought well I am sure its ok, this is probably the norm. John Kiiri (my colleague) then rang me from the road - he had been refused access to the hotel because he was carrying gas canisters for his home, would I mind walking out to the road.... this was not a problem it turned out that there was to be a state visit of the varoius presidents of Kenya, Sudan and Ethiopia, I arrived back at the hotel after work and it was coming to my time to leave the hotel and I noticed outside that the roads were closed off all around the hotel... How would a taxi ... read more

Hi today Fred (Territory Manager) insisted we leave a bit earlier and visit the National Park, I waited for John, my colleague to organise the tour guide and a little girl pointed at me and said " look mummy a white lady, today I have seen Giraffes and white people" :) I certainly saw many Giraffes but no white people... or Lions! only a small black domestic cat enjoying the sun... here are my pictures - we were only in there an hour and a half as it closes at 6pm but its a hard life when you have to work too!... read more
Nairobi, i still cant get over how much it looks like England
Published: February 28th 2012Africa » Kenya » Nairobi Province » NairobiHi all, after 34 hours I finally made it on Sunday night at around 11pm local time (3 hours ahead!) tired but not sleepy enough I lay awake in bed most of the night and then headed to the office in the morning. I idnt get to go to the National Park like I had hoped sadly. I met with our Nairobi Safety committee and Esther who I met last time who is now hugely pregnant with twins!! and we discussed lots of things which I will add to my report, today I completed an audit of the site sadly not much has changed since our last visit therefore Mike and I have alot of work that we need to do and I feel that this really does justify a full time Health and Safety assistant ... read more
Just a few more days left in America. I am excited, nervous and unsure of what to expect. I have been to Kenya before, yes that is true, but this some how feels different. I am leaving my beloved pets, family and treasured friends for a whole new culture. Will I fit in? Will I do what I am made for? Will I?????? It feels as though I have electricity flowing thru my body at 12,000 miles per hour! Jambo!... read more

Football season has finished. It was a good season. I missed good American football while living abroad. I expanded my horizons and learned to love the game of rugby (having a South African huband contributed to this appreciation). However, nothing beats the feeling of watching the quarterback throw a strong pass and seeing my favorite team catch and run the ball into the endzone for a touchdown. A win comes from a lot of practice and a team that works together. International Treasure House Ministries works as a team. We; those of you who contribute, we who distribute and those on the ground working hands on with the children are the team. We are a team that works toward the goal of saving children. Saving them from the hands of those people and circumstances that oppose ... read more
JDet har vært lange ... read more
