My last stop before coming home is Kenya to visit a NGO called Passion to Share. This organization was started by a young women who had a very difficult childhood. After her 7th step mother attempted to kill her she went to live in an orphanage run by Warm Hearts. They supported her through high school and college. When they would ask her what she wanted to be when she grew up said she wanted to be like them: helping others. And she has done just that. Lydia and her co-founder Noel started Passion to Share to lift up the girls in the slums of Kibera. This slum houses well over 250,000 people (counting is very difficult due to the nature of their living environment). This is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the ... read more

Thankfully, I slept until after 9:00 this morning, untroubled by waking in the night. Breakfast was a buffet of Kenyan, English and Indian cuisines; my choices were dates, papaya, a scone, strawberry jam, pork sausages, and sweet potato, with green tea. Fully satisfying. Instructions last evening were to be in the lobby by noon for a couple of excursions. I was the only one there, provoking all imaginable questions about time and location. I pacified my panic by looking around the hotel. Now called the Sarova Stanley , it was built in 1902 as the New Stanley Hotel. Many historic photos testified to its fame as the place to meet for safaris, meals, and social occasions. The Thorn Tree restaurant, where I had breakfast, used to be open air, and the thorn tree was famous as ... read more

Oddly, I fumbled all the processes of checking in and boarding in Calgary, as if I were a newbie – perhaps that’s what staying home during the pandemic did to me. This trip still seems like a dream, not a reality. I am now in the KLM lounge at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, a ten-minute walk from my arrival gate. This large lounge is virtually full – takes some walking around to find a seat. The main part of the airport, down one flight of stairs, is much busier – a constant passage of discontinuous crowds. As soon as I finish drinking my tea, I am going to mask again – too many sneezes and coughs can be heard. There are three and a half hours left of my almost six-hour wait. Our flight was more than ... read more

After breakfast at Sentrim Lodge, we left for our next adventure. I really would have loved to relax at the resort for a few hours, but that is not how Trekkup rolls. You definitely get your money's worth on these trips! Hippo Hunting So our first stop was to Lake Naivasha to go hunt for some hippos. We arrived at the beautiful Lake Naivasha Lodge, just gorgeous, where we would have our tour. We were each given a life jacket on our way to the dock and were split into three groups. You could already see many hippos hanging out in the water nearby! We precariously entered our small boats, with me wondering what would happen if an angry hippo nudged us. Then we were off traveling through the murky waters. They were mostly just standing ... read more

Our flight landed early in the morning and within two hours we were seeing the amazing African wildlife! So, there were about 14 of us on this 3-day weekend to Kenya. I knew a few from other trips, but the rest I had never met before. We landed and got through customs .... well, not so quickly. But we got outside to meet our guides. Instead of the planned breakfast we had expected, they said we would be going directly to our first game drive, so everyone got a coffee (I got juice) for the road. We loaded up into three vans and were on our way. Driving out of the airport was interesting as there were pretty cool sculptures of various African animals along on the side of the road. “No elephant is burdened by the weight of its tusks” - Kenyan proverb Greetings from Nairobi! We enjoyed our last breakfast in our Amsterdam B&B yesterday morning, before walking to Centraal Station and taking the train to the airport. Centraal is huge and there are lots of different platforms, so it’s a little confusing ensuring you are on the right platform. The train took around 20 minutes to get to the airport, and then we had to figure out where to go - the airport is really big and it’s also a bit confusing. I found it much more confusing than other airports. Once we found the correct check in location, it all went very smoothly. We had to show our proof of negative covid test, and the QR code we downloaded yesterday, and that was ... read more

Tanya always wanted to stay at this place. Yes, it's a little girl dream place. Slight issues....beside the hefty price, normal bookings need to be made a minimum of 18 months ahead. This is obviously pre-covid issue. So Covid came, and a room was available on the right day...one room left two months before the big day! So we booked! Little would Tanya or I be aware that 48 hours before our flight from Dubai to Nairobi, Tanya tested positive to Covid! No more plane, welcome 10 days isolation! The good news with solid places such as the Giraffe Manor...they have learn to work with a flexible mind. We knew we were coming...it would just be a little later. Actually, it ended being exactly two weeks behind the big day. They have 12 rooms, and on ... read more

This was a highly anticipated leg. A couple of pretty special places for us to visit and they did not disappoint. Also, some really unexpected delights. As usual, I prefer to allow the photos to tell the story. Panoramas: 1&2 Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side...looking to Zambia. 3. Samburu river view. 4. Maasi Mara dawn. Next, we fly to Singapore for a brief stay then an 8 day cruise up the Malay Peninsula to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Phuket.... read more

I said goodbye to the left African Bat Conservation team (including honorary additional Patrick!) at 7am and was taken to Lilongwe airport to catch my flight to Nairobi. I was a bit miffed that the lady at security confiscated my spare AAA batteries in spite of all online information saying they are fine to have in hand luggage but luckily Chavaunne was able to buy me some more at Heathrow! The rest of the flight went smoothly however and after a queue to get my visa I quickly got my bag & headed out to find Moses – our guide and driver from Adventure Alternative. As it was already afternoon I didn’t have much time to see Nairobi but I did get to visit the Giraffe Centre where I got to meet several Rothschild giraffes including ... read more

After a wonderful Christmas in the UK, we landed at the small airport in Nairobi, Kenya. It’s been my lifelong dream to visit Africa - a continent so different from mine in so many ways. As we queued for our tourist visa, the sounds of the Kenyan children’s choir (also arriving) filled the airport, and my excitement for our next adventure was overflowing. I couldn’t wait to experience the new culture, music, cuisines, animals and meet the people of Kenya. Maddi (the founder of the EvieGrace foundation) picked us up from the airport with Mercy who will also stay with us and cook for the house of volunteers. On the way to Ngong (sounding Gong), we stopped to get the boys at Global Shelter, some biscuits and sweets to celebrate the New Year with. We arrived ... read more
