TIA definitely applies to this blog. We were told that in Africa things go differently than most other places, this certainly was true on our first day overlanding – hopefully it isn’t a sign for things to come. We were told that our departure would be at 8.30am, make that 9.30am before we were on the road. We had the opportunity to chat with our group and everyone is getting on really well. We stopped at a shopping centre, Chris and I stocked up on some snacks as well as shampoo and conditioner. Their toiletries are really expensive over here. The truck then took off again and all was fine until we reached a hill, not a very big one mind. The clutch had gone on the truck and it took about 30 minutes before we ... read more

(Massively sorry for lack of travel blogs, we had difficulty getting internet in Africa. All photos will be uploaded shortly on facebook but will start getting these blogs uploaded now we are in Asia) We got a taxi from the Sarova Stanley in the afternoon towards the Acacia Camp where we would be staying tonight before we depart on the overland safari to the Masai Mara tomorrow. This Masai Mara trip is a three day trip and was an optional excursion which could be added on to our three week overland trip. One thing to note if you ever come to Nairobi, the taxi drivers will always try to charge you more than they should. (I know I had previously said that I was in the wrong…but this time is different). We were quoted 1200KSH in ... read more

Our flights to Nairobi were changed at the last minute, thankfully I had checked before going to bed on Thursday evening and seen that we had to be at Heathrow earlier than we had thought. Our flight was a direct flight which meant that we now arrived in Nairobi a day earlier, I didn't realise this until we were at Heathrow and realised that we had no accommodation booked for Friday night in Nairobi, slightly concerning. We arrived in Nairobi around 9.00pm on Friday evening and had to queue for AGESSS to get our visas. We didn't get them until around 10.30pm, by the time we got down to the baggage area our bags had been left to the side and it took some time trying to find them. When we got outside we were bombarded ... read more

I am now in the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, waiting for our flight to Johannesburg. Ah, Johannesburg and the British Airways Commodore Lounge! It will be smooth sailing after that. Yesterday morning our flight from Serengeti to Arusha, Tanzania left at 11a, so we got up early and did a game drive on the way to the airport. It’s hard to believe, but on the way to the airport, we witnessed a lion stalking and kill. A big, beautiful lioness was standing like a statue on a dead tree that had fallen over. We watched for a while, and then she headed across the field and got up on another dead tree. She was close to the road at that point, where 3 vehicles waited, watching her. Leaping down, she proceeded to come our ... read more

This piece of land in the photo lay unused for 11 years. There are three beautiful acres that lay barren because no one had the time or resources to invest to make it into something worth value. No weeds were pulled, no soil tilled, no seed planted. What could have been prosperous and plentiful lie dormant and fallow. Then…there was a vision. ITHM, Pastor Stanley, Alice and some hired help took to this piece of land, turned over its soil, pulled out those weeds and lay seed. What one person could not do, many people did, together. We created the second Giving Garden. The seed sprouted and now there are three acres of life sustaining nutrients. Food to nourish hungry bellies. Life is sprouting out of that ground. I think of the numerous children that’s hearts ... read more

Our group for July numbers six persons. We are currently completing Visa applications and getting things together, immunizations, medical equipment and supplies for the trip: July 11 - 29, 2013. We are three pastors -- two of them women, the Rev. Margaret Crowl, and the Rev. Sherry Karasik, and me, the Rev. Dr. Donald McCord, Moderator of the Partnership Committee; plus Sarah Jane Frederick, a church choir director/organist, and two lay people, Darlene Tapie and David Yawger. We will be hosted by the Nairobi Partnership Board members and meet with members of their three Presbyteries, leadership of the PCEA (the Presbyterian Church of East Africa). Our itinerary will include work on a new young congregation, still building its building, the Kasasule Rural Health Centre in the Kibwezi District (half-way down the main road from Nairobi to ... read more

We discovered a great asset for supplies and equipment for the Health Clinic, Kasasule, which we support together with our partners in the three Nairobi Presbyteries (North, East and Central). The Afya Foundation, housed in a huge warehouse in Yonkers, NY, gathers equipment and supplies from New York area hospitals and other facilities and has them available for programs like ours to take to health facilities abroad. When our Kenyan partners were here in May, we loaded six huge suitcases with such items as EKG monitors, Blood Pressure monitors, blood pressure cuffs, microscopes, etc. and the items went back to Kenya as checked luggage with our returning partners. We will be loading five or six large duffel bags (donated by L.L. Bean, through a friend who was formerly part of our congregation and part of a ... read more

After 3 nights, I decided it was time to leave Lamu and head back towards Nairobi. I got a speedboat back to Mokowe and found a bus going to Mombasa. This was fine until, just as we were about to leave, a lady showed up with a ticket for my seat. This was despite the fact that the conductor had told me to sit in that specific seat. This left me standing in the aisle as we got going. The conductor came down looking for money shortly afterwards. I told him I would only pay half price, as I had no seat. He then sent down the armed guard, who asked me was I not satisified? I told him no. About 15 minutes later, one of the passengers got off and they made sure the mzungu ... read more

Sopa! (Masaai for Hello) Last weekend I went to Nairobi for five days and spent three of those on a safari to the Masaai Mara. When I heard about the opportunity, I had to take it; I mean really, how often in your life are you going to get to go on a safari inAfrica. Honestly I was not excited about going to Nairobi. I had heard nothing positive from others who had been already and with a nickname like “Nairobbery” you would definitely be more wary of visiting. I was pleasantly surprised with what I found when I visited Nairobi. It was a very clean, colorful and western city. Although I did not spend much time in the city, all the Kenyan’s I met while on my trip were truly fantastic and really changed my ... read more
