Flew to Nairobi on Qatar Airways. It's a wonderful airline, and we'd rate it as one of the best in world. Great routes, decent prices and good service to boot. We had booked the Hotel Downtown ... well Eva had phoned them and made a reservation for the night of the 15th. When we arrived, they had no record of any such booking and had no rooms available. Now what? It was just after dusk, and anybody who knows Nairobi (aka Nairobbery) knows how most locals don't walk around much after dark, and certainly not with luggage nor backpacks. Helou! Nyt vihdoin sain tämän blogin vietyä nettiin. Tässä siis vielä hieman matkakertomusta kahdesta viimeisestä viikosta: Nyt viimesiä viedään. Joukkomme lisääntyi vielä yhdellä henkilöllä eli Jouni liittyi seuraan. Sovittiin Jounin kanssa että mä hoidan kaiken täällä valmiiksi ja sen tarvii vaan tulla tänne. Kaikki muut järjestelyt mm. asumus, safari yms. oli helppo järjestää, mutta hieman pään vaivaa toi kyyti Jounille kentältä Milimaniin. Päätin että lähden taxin kanssa hakemaan Jounia. Sain sumplittua suhteellisen hyvin diilin taxi-kuskin kanssa ja lähdin aamulla kohti kenttää. Milimanin vartija ei olisi millään päästäny mua yksin lähtemään taxin kyytiin, mutta sain sen puhuttua ympäri. October briefly. Murray visited Myanmar in October. Due to upcoming elections he was unable to visit the field sites which meant a shorter trip and being based in the main city Yangon. While he was there another cyclone passed through, but information was slow to come through from the rural areas. Murray had been back in Kenya awhile before the reports of damage and fatalities were made public. Despite the original fear, damage was not as bad as expected and only 30 or so people died. We went to Lake Naivasha for the weekend with some new friends. The kids are very sweet together; they played and explored the house and surrounding farm. This is a few months late, but I just realized I never published it. I'm sure you all miss me though and can't wait to hear about my last month in Kenya...it includes a dog attack, so you might wanna read it!!!! It's a good thing I learned in India to surrender to the fact that you cannot control anything and that life is just easier when you go with the flow...it made it much easier to deal with the disorganization of Kenya! And it didn't hurt when upon arriving at the school, I found out that my plans were useless and had to be changed. It turned out the school takes a 3 week break in April! Nairobi "Hadada", we hear while we sit on the balcony of our Hotel in Nairobi. We are in a shock: there they are again, those noisy Ibisses. For the first time we heard them on our campsite The Red Chili Hide away in Kampala (Uganda), 6 weeks earlier. And suddenly we realize that we have done it: we rounded Lake Victoria via the Southern way. At home we thought it to be impossible. But it was great. Now we leave East Africa via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. With Mauritius we fly to a new destination: an island somewhere in the Indian Ocean...Mauritius.... read more

Arrived in joberg airport feeling quite dazed and a bit groggy having perhaps left it a bit late on my flight to take 2 sleeping tablets... Went to toilets to arrange my things in bags, took my time and realized there were no other passengers to follow to the baggage carousel... Was i supposed to go thru customs/passport check first? and where were these places anyway? eventually made it to the carousel and found that everyone was still milling awaiting their luggage, over time the crowd kept diminishing until there was only me and perhaps five others waiting. 4.10.2010 Nairobi, Milimani En ikinä arvannu kun tänne lähdettiin että musta tulee leffatähti :) Täältä meijän majapaikasta kysyttiin haluttaisiinko mukaan saksalais-kenialaiseen leffaan. Meille maksettais 50€ ja saatais syömiset ja kyydit tuottajalta. Ei tarvinnu montaa kertaa miettiä vastausta, TOTTAKAI lähdettäisiin. Saatiin sitten vielä sovittua sairaalan kanssa että skipataan työt yhdeltä päivältä, kaikki oli siis aika bueno! Leffa kertoo etiopilaisesta mallista joka löydetään jostain pikkukylästä ja viedään saksaan. Tytöstä tulee maailman kuulu huippumalli ja lopulta hän palaa etiooppiaan perheensä luokse ja myös kuolee etiopiassa. Elokuva on tositapahtumiin perustuva. Meitä tarvittiin hautajaiskohtaukseen jossa olisimme naisen tuttuja saksasta (eli valkoihosia) suremassa naisen haudalla. Lähdettiin sitten maanantaina aamupäivästä ... read more

28.9.2010 Nairobi, Milimani No niin, nyt onkin sitten vaikka ja mitä kerrottavaa. Voisin vaikka aloittaa sillä että, ollaan nyt vaihdettu sairaalaa Hurlighamin Woman´s Hospitaliin. Se on tässä kävelymatkan päässä (n.25min) ja siellä ollaan oltu nyt perjantaista lähtien. Itse oon ollu well baby clinicalla, eli suomeksi neuvolassa. Siellä annetaan rokotteita, tehdään vauvojen mittaukset ja tutkitaan raskaana olevia naisia. Se on ollut hyvä paikka, henkilökunta on kivaa ja vaihteeksi on kiva ”hoitaa” terveitä ihmisiä. Ollaan opittu myös kulkemaan täällä busseilla (se ei oo niin helppoa kun vois kuvitella). Bussi maksaa aamu- ja iltapäiväruuhka-aikana 30-40 senttiä ja normaalisti 20 senttiä. Eli ei oo hinnalla pilattu. Bussiin voi hypätä oikeastaan mistä tahansa, mutta bussipysäkkejäkin on. Jotkut bussipysäkit on hyvin merkattu, mutta yleensä bussi... read more

Nairobi 24.9.2010 Nyt on pakko kertoa viimeyön tapahtumista... Alustuksena sen verran että tää Milimani Backpackers sijaitsee tälläsen hiekkatien päässä vähän syrjässä ja tossa ihan vieressä on autopesula (eli tohon tuodaan auto ja miehet pesee sen siinä käsin). Meijän asumus on, toisin kun nää muut, erillinen talo ja yksi seinä siitä on suoraan viereiselle kadulle tai oikeastaan kujalle (ja se kuja näyttää siltä ettei sinne halua päivälläkään mennä). Noh, täällä täytyy nukkua aina korvatulpat korvissa, koska aina on yöllä jotain ääniä mm. linnut laulaa, kukko kiekoo, koira haukkuu yms. Nyt heräsin kuitenkin yöllä siihen että ihan meijän seinän vieressä (mikä on siis sinne kujalle) joku huusi kurkku suorana. En ensin unen pöppörössä tajunnu mikä juttu oikeen oli, mutta sitten huomasin että Lottakin oli hereillä ja alettiin ... read more
