Orphans CelebrateOrphans CelebrateOrphans Celebrate

The Easter celebration for AIDS orphans.
April 19th! This is the day of Tony’s birthday… he turns 30 in Kenya! Tonight we will celebrate with the other missionaries and volunteers in a double-party for Tony and Katherine, a volunteer for one year at the hospital. She is an IT person, and is helping to make the hospital computerized.

The last week since our arrival in Maua has been full and challenging. We are finding ourselves adjusted to the time zone, but still working to adjust to the pace and life in Maua. I worked in the medical ward 2 days along with Jane, whom I mentioned in a previous post. I also did 2 days in the trauma room, which is basically the hospital’s ER. I have been able to do many dressing changes, giving shots, giving IV treatments, etc. under the supervision of one of the nurses (since my license did not transfer here). The system is very different from what I am used to… they even use glass IV bottles, and I had to re-learn IV therapy! It is a good thing I am not given full responsibility as a nurse, since the equipment and system are so different. These days were very challenging

for me, as I witnessed so much suffering and death.
We had a bit of a misadventure a few nights ago. Tony and I were falling asleep, and we thought we heard someone enter into our apartment. It turned out to be noises from our neighbors, but we were very convinced that someone had been in the apartment, and ended up calling the Savutos who called security to come over with their sticks and help us out! Thankfully, it was all ok, and we ended up attributing our mistake to the fact that the apartments are full of concrete and causes the noises to echo very loudly, and this was the first night we had gone to bed without the accompaniment of noise from the night club behind the apartments, or heavy rains. Also, we are both taking Malarone, the malaria pill which can cause hallucinations. We had taken the pill at dinner that night… hmm… I think next week we’ll choose to take it as early in the day as possible!

Tony has been busy putting together a video for the hospital. He has gone around and interviewed many members of hospital staff. He is also trying to

help Katherine in getting a website set up for the hospital. I included some pictures from the AIDS orphan’s party which Tony attended yesterday in the hospital chapel. So many children came to sing, hear a message, eat and get toys. This party was organized by the Giving Hope program which is connected with the hospital. They help the orphans to get school uniforms and education. After they have finished school, they assist the orphans with job training and micro-loans to start a business. When Tony is not busy with the video, he is going around the hospital with the evangelist and chaplain, visiting and praying with the patients. He says it is difficult to see the patients suffering, particularly the children in the burn unit. However, he is learning a lot about the visitation aspect of pastoring.

It is so nice to have a day off today, to just sleep in (until 7:45! I would have considered this getting up early before!) and lounge around the apartment in our PJ’s until we go across the street to use the internet😊. So until next time…

Happy Belated Birthday!
We both wish Tony a very Happy Belated 30th. We're glad you were able to celebrate with other missionaries and volunteers, although I'm sure it wasn't the same as playing laser tag at Bullwinkles! We will continue to pray that the rest of your trip is filled with blessings and that you don't have any more hallucinations that lead to crazier misadventures :-) Take care and God Bless, Stacy and Anthony
