HELLO! It's been a while since I updated this so this entry is going to be MASSIVE!but I have the day off school and nothing to do so I'm going to blast through it as much as possible (also the internet cafe has setanta so I get to watch the football at the same time!the real reasons I'm going to be here for so long). Anyway, I've had the last 3 weeks off school as it was the christmas holidays and I've been travelling around Ghana a fair bit. I'll give you all an insight into my adventures over the past few weeks. So, the last month of school was pretty shite to be perfectly honest. Our hosts were being pretty crappy to us, not talking to us for a week at a time etc. One ... read more

Oh well, I might have been expecting too much, or maybe my better grasp of English was to blame, and I expect all manner of reproachment for such sweeping cultural judgements, but hey, I can't deny that an unusual number od people were just plain rude to me in hotels, street outlets and transport booths in Ghana. The country is beautiful, to be sure, and as a greatly redeeming feature the kids were extra nice and sweet to me in the street, so I guess my cousin Lyndsay, who spent some weeks at an orphanage got the best of the country from their company. It was right on my first day here, going through Ho, and after a terribly failed attempt at changing travellers checks, that I was looking arround at my surroundings, desparate to find ... read more

Hello People! Apologies that it's been a while since I've updated this!Your probably wondering what fantastic adventures I've been getting up to that kept me away for so long? To be honest I just couldn't be bothered, it's alot of work this blog thing you know? So!I'll give you the 411 on what I've been getting up to since the last time you read. WE had our school trip to the harbour and it was pretty interesting (not the harbour but the bus journey there!). All the kids were rowdy as hell and then the second the bus left the school someone cracked out a horn, drums and cow-bell (which is one of the most popular instruments here, love it!) and the bus became a gig. We had Maxwell busting out a freestyle rap (in Fante ... read more

Hello there! SO it's been a few weeks since I did my last Blog "surely he's done some crazy cool stuff that I'm going to be well jealous about" is probably what you're thinking....you're correct. So the last time I left you we had just been to the football and the "dumping ground". Did the usual teaching malarky during the week and then hit the beach at the weekend. Well Brenu Beach was the total opposite from Shama!perfect beach, the sea was stupidly warm and the food was awesome....stayed for 3 days and only paid lik 20 quid for the experience which is always nice! Also not having to watch people poo is always a bonus... It was quite a small group of us that ended up going but that was better to be honest, i ... read more

Before I tell you about my third weekend, I should introduce my good friend Mr Bradt. That’s not his real name, but Bradt are the only publisher which do a guide just for Ghana (The Lonely Planet people obviously don’t see why anyone would want to spend enough time in West Africa to care which bit of it they’re in), and so the cheery chatty man who wrote it has become something of a guru to all visitors to the country. If it’s not in the Bradt guide, it may as well not exist. After all, tourism offices, public maps and information leaflets haven’t really caught on here, so even the most intrepid travellers are pretty much bound to following Mr Bradt Guide’s words of wisdom. I thought Aletta might have snuck a Dutch travel guide ... read more

Hey guys, Apologies that its taken me a while to do the next installment of this but i'm a busy boy y'know? So since last time!i've started teaching properly now and it's been a mixed bag really. Some of the students are shockingly bad, like they can't do anything because their education up until now has been pretty shoddy and then there's kids who are stupidly intelligent (like, wellllll more intelligent than I was at that age or perhaps even now) and the divide makes it really difficult to teach them all at the same pace. This makes my job more difficult but i must admit it's pretty good when they all get what your talking about. Plus I was going out of my nut having nothing to do for the first week or so, it's ... read more

Hey guys! I'm getting pretty good at this blog malarky! We have the day off school today because of Eid Al-Fitr (end of muslim fasting) so I thought I would update you all!So.....what have I been up to you may ask? Well! After the last entry we were pretty much just sitting around observing classes and waiting for Roy and Danielle (2 of the other volunteers) to get to our school on Friday before we headed off to Butre beach the next day. School was pretty quiet cause they never do anything on a Friday then things took a slightly bizzare twist! After my power nap (such a hard life eh!) I went outside to see 40 schoolchildren cutting the grass...with machetes!then there was a massive commotion and all these kids started running around machetes above they're heads. Turns ... read more

Akwaaba!Welcome to my blog! I apologise that it's taken me this long to get onto the internet but I am in Africa. I'm currently sitting in an internet cafe in Takoradi, Western Region, Ghana. It's about 30 degrees and stupidly sunny, how's about that for making you jealous! The first 10 days of my trip have been pretty cool. We arrived pretty late on the 14th into Accra and we're picked up by our rep Henry. Your first few moments in Africa are pretty intense to say the least and they don't really wait around to start trying to scam money out of you (people here are stupidly friendly, but they also think that everyone is loaded and can just throw money around). Our first week was general orientation to how things work here, we stayed ... read more

Finally made it to Takoradi, at 9pm- seriously dark! Maybe it wasn't such a good idea that Bobbi and I hadn't booked a room, as we were dragging our big bags around the city, looking for a hotel with decent prices. Armenla Hotel was a bargain for good sized bedrooms, but the toilets didn't lock.. hmm. The following day we literally went in circles around Takoradi, looking for a bank to change my traveller's cheques. Was very annoying to find out they were outside the city! So we decided to make our way to our next destination: Green Turtle Lodge (again). Bobbi hadn't been there and we thought it would be a good place to unwind before coming back home. It was funny meeting one of the German volunteers, who had been teaching at Royal Seed. ... read more

Anna, Mieke, Meg (volunteers at Royal Seed) and myself travelled to Takoradi (south west of Ghana) by tro tro for 4 hours. We booked a room at Green Turtle Lodge for the weekend, which came to a bargain of 10Ghana cedis a night at student rate!! The idealic place is pretty much isolated on the beach with no mobile reception. There were a number of red thatched huts with small solar panels for accomodation, as well as tents at a cheaper price. Not only did the huts make the place feel likle an exotic holiday, but the coconut trees, bright flowers and birds which I rarely see here in Ghana. Apart from the young English couple with their baby and their cool friend, all the workers are Ghanian :) The money Green Turtle Lodge earns is ... read more
