We still chuckle at the dictaphone tapes I sent home from Ankasa, as I tried to record the sounds of the rainforest, sharing my experiences. I distinctly remember rewinding the tapes to see if the noises could be heard and then pressing record once more to try again. Oh course I failed to realise that's it' is difficult to hear a recording of something which is still going on live in front of you. Ankasa Rainforest, Ghana. Over five hundred square kilometers of wet evergreen. Wow, what a sense of disappointment I felt when I was told I would be spending a month there. I soon came to realise how wrong I had been. It never ceased to surprise me how quickly the climate changed as we turned off the main road and drove towards the ... read more

11/14/2010 Hello everyone! I have just returned from an amazing weekend in the Western Region of Ghana. I played almost the entire weekend at the beach so I am feeling a little sunburned on my shoulders and a bit tired from the long day of traveling. I spent last week studying hard for my first final exam in my Ghanaian society, government, and politics class so I felt a relaxing weekend trip out of Accra was much deserved and necessary. I left early Friday morning with my two friends Naima and Ric and we caught a cab to Tema station where we then boarded a bus that would take us to Takoradi. (A side note about these buses is that although they are quite comfortable and have air conditioning, they always play these horrible Ghanaian movies ... read more

We arrived about 8:00 this morning at another port on our visit to Africa, the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, capital of the Western Region of Ghana. It is Ghana’s fourth largest city and an industrial and commercial center. The chief industries are timber, cigarettes, shipbuilding and railroad repair. Takoradi is the largest city closest to the Equator and the Prime Meridian, making the city the most central location on the world map! The closest land to the Equator, Prime Meridian and Sea Level is Cape Three Points, about 60 miles west of Takoradi. Takoradi is the home to Ghana’s first and important deepwater seaport built in 1928. Both Takoradi and Sekondi stemmed from 17th Century Dutch, Swedish and English forts. The two cities combined in 1946. During World War II, the Takoradi Air Base was an ... read more

Only my second day here in Takoradi, but I luv it already. The people, the walks, the weather, the houses, and of course the kids!! Today we went for a walk first thing,... and wow, it wasn't even 9 AM and it was +33. We got back, drenched, and visited with the gaurds for a bit. Then we we then went uptown to the hardware store, grocery store, and to Georgina's fruit stand. It was so funny, everyone said to my mom... "where have you been for 3 months?" I thought it was pretty cute! Then we came home and fed the kids some treats... I think I may have named them today. George and Gina.... might have to run that by their dad first. hehe Tonight we went to a pub near the harbour for ... read more

This weekend was an absolute blast. A group of about 10 spent the long 4 day holiday weekend at the Green Turtle Lodge in Dixcove, a small town outside of Takoradi. We had planned on going into Takoradi and spending one afternoon there, but we pretty much ended up just hanging out on a beautiful beach not wanting to leave. It was amazing to me how cheap it was to stay there (approx $3 a night in a tent) and have only maybe 30 people at most on a 2 mile long stretch of beach. Palm trees, sand crabs, outside showers, amazing rough waves, great food, and really interesting people, were just a few things that helped make this weekend fabulous. We got to know a few ex-peace corps guys who had just finished 27 months ... read more

On 7th August I travelled to Beyin Beach Resort with four other volunteers - Hollie, Claire, Hugo and Callum, from where we would visit Nzulezu Stilt Village by canoe accros the Amansuri Wetlands. We had a pleasant STC bus journey about four hours west along the coast to Takoradi where we stopped for a nice lunch in a German restaurant (and also got 10% off our bill for paying in cash and not needing a VAT receipt, cheeky) then travelled another three hours along the coach on a cramped but stress-free and unusually uneventful trotro to Beyin. The nice tro driver took us all the way to the beach resort as we were the last passengers to alight (I might start using this word at home, it’s a lot nicer than ‘get off’) and he agreed ... read more

Whilst in Ghana, there are lots of things to see and do, but one of the most breath taking views for me is not the scenery of golden beaches, or the beautiful overviews of Mole National Park, but the way of life within one of the simplistic areas of Ghana. In my view the Nzulezo Stilt Village is truly remarkable, the way of living here is unbelievable, and the hardest thing to do was to leave to our luxury Beyin Beach Resort. As another weekend went by we decided to travel towards the West coast just 12km from the Ivory Coast border. As we arrived in Beyin to a beautiful beach resort, surrounded by towering palm trees golden beaches and the ocean breeze, we were in luxury not to mention the treat of a Hot ... read more

Hey all,... Another blog, with LOTS of photos! Friday 13th February As I left the house on Friday morning, with my little back pack over my shoulder, full of excitement for the coming weekend away,... Mr Wulff had a few words to say: 'Where are you going?' - Butre. 'Who with,... not alone?' - No, there is a group of 7 of us. ' mmmm... you're not taking any important documents, no passport, not too much money, nothing expensive?!' - No Sir, absolutely not. 'ummm... good,... don't loose anything, look after yourself'. Will do! Thanku! Bless!!! I was hoping to leave the office an hour earlier today, but needed to check with Nana that it was going to be OK. Now, it always appears nigh on impossible to speak to Nana when you need to... I ... read more

This weekend I finally made it to the infamous Green Turtle Lodge. I had heard so many great things about it that I couldn’t wait to go and it was the first weekend they could fit us in. Bethany, Melissa, and Max headed up there the day before but I had class so I went on Saturday with John. This weekend just further proved the theory of “the best laid plans of mice and men…” We left the hostel at 6 am bright and early. I was dirty and needed to shower, but the hostel was out of water. No water=no shower=no brushed teeth… yum. We went to the trotro station and then we had to find the bus station to take us to Takoradi. We started asking around for the bus station and a guy ... read more

This past weekend most of the girls from my group and I went to the beach to celebrate our friend Margaret’s 21st birthday. We traveled about 6 hours west of Accra to the resort town of Busua and the more isolated Butre, and I must say I think those beaches are the most beautiful places that I have ever been! I will try to post pictures, because words won’t do enough to describe it. Picture the perfect postcard image of a white sand beach, sparkling blue water, palm trees, and hammocks. In Butre, there were fishing villages on either side of the hotel where we stayed - far away enough so that we didn’t bother/get bothered by the locals, but close enough to add to the charm and atmosphere of the beach. We could watch the ... read more
