A day at an outreach clinic + Celia’s boyfriend’s research project = spontaneous weekend trip across border to Togo capital city of Lomé. Hadn’t planned on visiting Ghana neighbors, though heard border crossing was easy. Well, it is…if you are Ghanaian! But, still, relatively simple for a visitor. During down time at an outreach clinic in a small village called Ando No. 2 (outlying village of Have), I pulled out my Ghana map and tourist guide. Joyce and Louisa, clinic nurses, showed us their homes on the map, one of which is very near the Togo border in southeast Ghana. Both talked about how Ghanaians regularly cross the border to buy cheaper goods, and the ease of border crossing. This information would not have been quite so interesting if Celia’s boyfriend had not done a research ... read more

As most of you know by now, I have a wonderful opportunity to participate with a non-profit volunteer organization called Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS). CCS places volunteers in countries around the world in partnership with sustainable community initiatives and brings people together to work side-by-side while sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding. With my background in history and elementary education, I have discovered a perfect fit in an overseas program in Ghana. I will embark on this journey with my friend and co-worker, Tina Harris, on Friday, July 11, 2008. I was able to get a direct Delta flight to Ghana from JFK! Can you believe it's only 15 hours??? I should be hearing from CCS in the next two weeks about my placement in the community. Fortunately, I'll have access to the internet in town. It's ... read more

So it’s been a pretty exciting week. I am doing more teaching in the Grade 4 and 5 English classes and the kids are starting to ace the tests which makes me pretty proud. I sat in on the sex education class and was a bit disappointed in many ways. I gave them a test, 13 questions and most averaged at 4 1/2. So I was bummed. I gave them same test to do over the weekend so they could do their own research and only 6 of them handed it in out of about 20. Hopefully, when Lucy takes over the class, she can give them the same test and see if they improve. Soooo, what else? Weehheelll, Lucy and I got up at 5:30am on Friday to do our washing. And what do I ... read more

Today was my last full day in Ghana and I thought I would just relax and say goodbye to a few people. I should know by now that nothing goes to plan in Africa! I spent most of the day in the hospital from hell. Stephen that I know has a second cousin or some kind of relative that lives beside him. He is only 5 years old and called Johnny. Over the last 2 weeks I have seen him going about and thought he looked a bit ill but did not think too much about it intially. But yesterday when I was visiting, he was not in school and when I asked why, was told he was feeling too ill. His parents are not around - they are alive but don't live with him. His ... read more

Only 5 days left in Ghana - I knew that 2 weeks would go past too quick. There's so much I could do here, or places to visit but not enough time. This time next week I'll be back at my desk at work - there is no comparison to life here! When I was here last year, I randomly met an artist called Kofi who I bought some paintings from. I remembered roughly where he lived so on Friday morning I set off to find him. He is not far from the hotel I am at so it only took about 10 minutes to find him again, and he remembered me straight away. I told him I was looking for a painting in a specific colour but he did not have one. However, he simply ... read more

The locals often say to me 'Don't you worry......' After typing my last blog, I headed straight for the hotel swimming pool to cool down because it was so hot. After the rain storm on Monday, the skies cleared and the heat has been unbearable. I was just getting ready to dive in the pool when I realised there was no water in it!!! The pool was being repaired. 'Don't you worry.....' said one of the hotel porters, 'it will be ready for you soon.' I'm still waiting. If you've ever been to Ghana you will know Ghana time is different from the rest of the world! I met Stephen again on Tuesday night and he told me that on Tuesday morning his father called all the family together in the morning. He thought his father ... read more

I'm finally back in Ho!! 1 year and 2 months after I left, I've made it back. When I first came to Ghana in January 2007 I thought it would be a one off - that I would never do it again, but after 8 weeks I knew I would have to come back one day. I met so many great people and had such an amazing time at Prince of Peace school and the SWODC orphanage that I had to come back. There has been no internet access until today - due to the weather, so I have a lot to say..... I think I felt more nervous about coming this time - I'm not sure why, probably because I was worried it would not be as good as I remembered or that something would ... read more

Woke up really upset and not prepared for my last day at Christ. I brought all of the supplies I've accumulated to give to Christ to keep when I leave. When we got to Christ Raymond wasn't there which was really confusing. On last days of placement he usually throws a little "thank you" celebration for the volunteers. When Raymond did show up he held the goodbye ceremony. The kids sing this song about goodbyes and how if we never wee each other again the Lord will allow us to meet in heaven. It was SO SO SO sad. I cried a bunch. We were presented out traditional cente cloths and given Christ Orphanage polo shirts. Saying the final goodbye was really hard. I started crying when I saw most of the kids in my oldest ... read more
