We got to the beach by lunch time on Saturday after quite a quick journey (only 6hrs). Kokrobite fitted the description in the travel guide well, of being a relaxing beach resort full of volunteers wanting some r&r. We wandered around a little while trying to find a hotel to stay in as we had not booked one before we left. It was easy enough to find one as there was a hotel every 2 meters! After checking in and deciding that Fuzzy could sleep on the mattress on the floor we went to an Italian resuartant for lunch and had a lush pinapple pizza. After lunch we headed for the beach. All along the sand are little shops selling souveneers so we ended up doing quite a lot of shopping! I am now the owner ... read more

Ok its been a while again.... School: the Children are so sweet! most of them are really nice and friendly but they know we wouldn't cain them so they run circles around us! We have discovered if we threaten to sen them to Master they hush up quite quick! Although it didn't work when he went away for the afternoon..... Harriet and I are usually paired together and we start each lesson constructively but it does deteriorate into just playing and messing about! We've taught in P6,5,3,2 and 1at different times that is! At least one teacher doen't turn up everyday resulting in us taking their place but we have no clue what subject we're actually covering or how many children there are, what equipment they have and to what standard they understand English. When I ... read more

So we've been in Ho for a few days now... So here's a quick update! We got here on a very long tro-tro ride, there was a lot of traffic as supposedly friday's are funeral/wedding days so everyone goes off to celebrate (yes they celebrate funerals as well! lots of music to cheer up the family of the bereaved!). The tro was amazing though, air con! its took a good 3-4 hours but when we got to the house we were so relieved! its pretty amazing! Bunk beds, fans, a fridge, tv, stereo, loads of books, 2 showers, 2 toilets and a kitchen! couldn't wish for more! Satturday we went for a tour of the town, which i a little small but has plenty of bars and restaurants! Saturday night we went out with the crew. ... read more

This is a long one, you may wish to digest it in portions It had been 14 years since I flew out of Nairobi. I had spent 3 months travelling through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique Swaziland and South Africa, probably the greatest travel experience of my life. Anita and I had talked about doing voluntary work, in Africa, before we left Aotearoa nearly 18 months ago but we had not made any set plans. We had spent 3 months, in London, trying to find employment in Europe during the summer months without success and given we did not want to return to a Kiwi winter, we returned to our orginal plan of voluntary work. After checking out several organisations we settled on IVHQ, unknown to us and ironically a NZ organisation. The website ... read more

So this weekend I decided it would be a great idea to wear myself down into the ground. We got back from Mole on Thursday morning and I slept the day away until that afternoon when I went to Champs with some friends to watch the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. It was exciting because I was able to watch the LSU game but didn’t watch the second set of games because it was getting late here and I was worn out. The next day I left to go to the Volta region where we were going to do some hiking and go to the Wli water falls. Some of the group left on Thursday but there was no way I could physically do that after Mole so we left Friday afternoon. On the ... read more

This weekend I went back to the Volta Region with the girls from my group to see the monkey sanctuary. It was our first time taking a trip on our own and I felt like I had a “real” African experience because we spent the night on the outskirts of a village called Tafi Atome and interacted with the local people as well as the monkeys. And it helped that we didn’t pull up in a huge air conditioned tour bus with a guide. It took three hours by tro-tro to arrive, and then the sanctuary was 5km down a dirt road. Three local girls helped us down the road until we found a pick up truck that gave us a ride the rest of the way. Once we got there we met Emmanuel who would ... read more

Sorry I have not kept this blog updated... there has not been too too much to write about so I saved myself the frustration of dealing with the internet for awhile. This past weekend we went to the Volta Region and stayed in a village (Liati-Wote) with families. In this village there is a waterfall and a mountain you can climb. The plan was to leave Saturday morning and go to a monkey sanctuary and Sunday we were supposed to climb the mountain and then visit the waterfall. Unfortunately, due to a flat tire mid way through the trip we had to alter our plans. Let me first start by explaining the ride up there. We actually left pretty much on time (about 20 minutes late). The bus we had did not have any air conditioning ... read more

I don't think I ever need to see another goat, cow, or chicken cross the street! Malaria is widespread in Hohoe. Our house mom has fallen ill to it, and one of the teachers at my school also has become infected. They tell the volunteers not to worry-it's just like the common flu in America. The only people who die from it are in remote villages who cannot reach a doctor to take the pills. I'm not sure if I believe that. It makes me angry to think of all the people who are dying bc they don't have access to proper treatment. The most interesting person I've met here is Mary. She owns a local batik fabric shop. Looking at her shop, you would think it's like any other on the street; however, in the ... read more

Hi everyone! I don't know where to begin~ There's so much to share with you! I've been mixed with many emotions about Hohoe bc there are so many issues here, but the people are so welcoming and friendly. I have not been able to walk down the street without every single person saying welcome and asking how my day is. Please know that I'm very safe here! School is stressful but in a different way than at Little Silver. The children are so used to rote memorization, so they have never been able to think for themselves. I worked with one of the boys in my class on his reading. He read beautifully using the book from our school, but when I brought a book from the home base, he couldn't read one word. In fact, ... read more

Well, I made it to Ghana! My first experience traveling from the airport to my town, Hohoe, was very difficult. On our way, we arrived at a large bridge. Unfortunately, part of the bridge was beginning to collapse. ( A piece of the bridge had fallen into the water below earlier that day.) The police wouldn't let any cars go over it. Our leader pulled some strings and settled on an agreement with the police. Our van was not allowed to drive over it with all of the people in it, bc it would be too heavy. Our driver asked us to get out of the van with our luggage and walk over the bridge. He said he would drive the van over himself and to be careful walking bc the bridge could collapse at any ... read more
