Kokobritechildren playing on the beach just before sunset
Thankfully (or not?) there's not too much to report right now. Last week I interviewed a few of the staff members at the CDD for the documentary I'm making for them and yesterday I nearly risked my life videotaping random people on the street (they did NOT seem to like that!). BUT, starting this Friday, I will be traveling almost every day until the day I leave. This weekend I will spend one night in Cape Coast and will do all of the 'touristy' stuff there...traversing the canopy walk in Kakum and touring the numerous slave forts/castles along the coast. After that, I will be traveling with Zach and Christian for 5 days to northern Ghana where we'll go to Mole National Park, the best place in the country to see wildlife ('safaris' are typically in eastern Africa but there are still tons of elephants, monkeys, and hippos in Ghana). After that, I will be back in Accra for 3 days before heading off to the Togolese refugee camps! Woohoo!
In order to relax before my whirlwind tour of the country, I went to Kokobrite (a small village about 45 minutes from Accra) last weekend with Timo, Christian, Simon, Zach,
and this new guy Hansel. The place was beautiful, though much more touristy than Ada Foah (I think there may have been more Obrunis than Ghanaians there....) and I sat and talked for a while with a Rastafarian (sp?) man named Yogaya. I also played soccer with some Ghanaian teens and 20-somethings, one of whom even complimented me on my game (shocking considering I've barely played soccer since I was 16....). After that, I took a tro-tro back to Accra where I had a 3-hour brunch at Prof's house (the Executive Director of CDD). Oh, and in the past week, we have lost 5 obrunis (Jessica, Candice, Anne, Kristin, and Simon) and I am now the only obruni at CDD and only one of two people at the Obruni House who speak English as a first language. Sadly, my attempts to learn Danish and German have thus far been futile :(
