Greetings: It is fairly early on our first Sunday in Ghana. My group, Private Collection is slowly gathering for breakfast and a first-hand view of the Volta River. We have traveled from the capital of Accra and am now in the Eastern Region in a city near the Volta Region, Akosombo.
Saturday: We were invited by Hon. Peace Baku, my former sister-in-law to the Enstoolment of Osie A. Tekpor VII as the Paramount Chief of Avatime Traditional area. We departed Accra at approx. 7:20am, with one extended rest stop, arriving in Vane/Avatime at approx. 11:45am. Our group was warmly greeted and seated on the "high table" as the Baku family's special guests. We witnessed a very orderly, happy, celebrating gathering of residents of this area who included both traditional and Christian prayers and installations. There was a lot of lively music and group dances in honor of the paramount chief. The programme actually began at 5:30am and continued long past our departure at 3:15pm. As a part of the traditions at such a royal celebration, we collected $104 and Peace presented to the new paramount chief as our gift to him. Additionally almost all of the members of the group joined in the dance of the women before the paramount chief. It was fun and the women in Vane welcomed us in their dance circles.
After the ceremony, we went to one of the highest points in Ghana, where looking down, you could see the 7 surrounding villages. The mountains were simply, beautifully breath-taking.
Enroute to the ceremony, Nathan, who is our tour guide shared with us the history of how the Volta Region became a part of the country of Ghana, is it was formerly a part of the adjacent country of Togo.
Sunday: We are slated to depart at 8am for a full day cruise on the Volta River, returning at 4pm. We will be served lunch. Everyone except 3 of the group will be on the cruise. Will write later. Keep us in your prayers for further safe travels and journeys. By the way, I have not made the time to write in my journal yet...working on it. Later!
