3/15/09 This week has been abnormal to say the least, but I am finding that weeks like this occur quite frequently so I am accustomed to expect the unexpected. As you all know, last Friday was Ghana’s Independence Day, and as a result the following Monday was a national holiday and there was no school. In the past 2 weeks, the school has officially had 4 days off, but in reality, many students took even more days off. On Tuesday there was inter-school girls’ volleyball. Since I am not scheduled to teach on Tuesdays I took the opportunity to go watch the competition. Last year the event was held at ABSEC, but this year it was held at Christ the King Catholic SHS in Obuasi. Last year our girls took second at the event and advanced ... read more

3/8/09 This was another irregular week as far as school goes. Monday was the last day of the mid-term break, and classes were supposed to be back to normal on Tuesday. I am not scheduled to teach any classes on Tuesdays, but I planned on teaching one of the classes during a free period they had so they wouldn’t fall behind the other class. Most of the students decided to extend their mid-term break and didn’t come to school on Tuesday. When I went to go teach, I found that there were only a handful of students present so I chose not to teach. On Wednesday and Thursday I would say that about 25% of the form 1 students came to school. The classes were so small that I combined all 4 form 1 classes to ... read more

3/1/09 Whether you can believe it or not, it’s already March and yet another month has passed. This week has not been a typical week as far as school goes. The mid-term break started on Thursday, which means that mid-term exams had to be given this week. The mid-term break and testing has been posted on the schedule of the term so I knew that it was supposed to happen this week. I was hoping to get one period of teaching in this week before giving the mid-term exam to my classes, but plans rarely go the way you hope in Ghana. On Monday on my way to teach my first class, I was surprised to see most of the students out of their classrooms. I was then informed by fellow teachers that they were holding ... read more

2/22/09 In contrast to last week’s entry, this week’s blog post will be much shorter. As far as school goes, I had a full week of classes without any interruptions. Looking at how many weeks there are left in the term and how much material I still have to cover, there is no way that I am going to get through the entire syllabus. Maybe if I had the form 1s for the entire first term I might have been able to get through the syllabus, but that’s not the case. I assigned a short homework assignment and now that there are 220 form 1 students, it took me four and a half hours to grade the homework assignment. I am not a fan of lesson planning, but I have to say that grading is definitely ... read more

2/10/09 Hey peoples, how’s it going? I just realized as I typed the date that I have been in Ghana for 8 months today. It seems like just yesterday I was stepping off the plane for the first time in Ghana. It also seems like I’ve been here forever at times though. Now that I’m back in the full swing of school, it seems like the weeks are just flying by. I’m finding that I either have absolutely nothing to do or I am extremely busy. There doesn’t seem to be a medium ground for teachers in the Peace Corps. This last week was much better than the previous one and I was even more busy than usual. Last week I scheduled to be one of the masters on duty. It is the master on duty’s ... read more

2/1/09 Hey everybody, how’s it going? I’m doing alright, but this last week was not good at all as far as my school is concerned. The first bit of bad news came on Monday. Last weekend a boy in form 2 died. My first question was how did it happen? On a number of occasions I have asked Ghanaians how a person died and I always get the same response. “He or she got sick and died a couple days later.” Apparently the boy got sick and was admitted to a hospital in Kumasi, but he didn’t make it out. Since I taught form 2 math for half of last term, I had the boy in class. I didn’t know the boy by name, but I knew his face. I eventually heard that the boy might ... read more

1/25/09 Hey everybody. It has been over a month since my last blog entry and I’m really sorry I’ve been slacking lately. The last month was pretty hectic, but I’m back in the swing of things at site so I’ll be getting back to my routine of trying to write something every week. As most of you know, I came back to America for Christmas. My trip didn’t start off too well thanks to flight delays, missed connections, and snow in Seattle. I was extremely lucky to get a flight out of New York and even luckier when my flight was diverted to Salt Lake City where my wonderful girlfriend picked me up so I could get some sleep, food and take a shower. All in all I think I arrived in Seattle only 14 hours ... read more

12/14/08 It has been a couple weeks since my last post and a lot has happened in the meantime. I’ll try to cover everything yet be a brief as possible. The first major event was the inter-house athletics competition, which is better known as track and field in the US. As far as the track, equipment, and other facilities go, a picture is worth a thousand words and I took tons of pictures so you’ll have to take a look when I come home for Christmas. The track was supposedly 300 meters, but I’m not sure how accurate that is because the lanes were grooved out with machetes the week before the event. The track was on the soccer field, which I have already illustrated was a mix of dirt, rocks, long grass, and rolling hills. ... read more

11/30/08 All I can say is that the last two weeks have been a blur. I am emotionally and physically exhausted. I guess I’ll just pick up where I left off last time. As most of you all know, I made a short visit home to go to my Grandma Viv’s funeral. My flight was supposed to leave Accra at 10:30 am on Wednesday and I was supposed to get into Seattle a little before midnight that same day. Things did not go as planned though. We boarded the Delta flight on time and just before we were about to taxi from the gate the pilot said that there was a problem with the satellite communication antenna and that they were going to reposition the plane to try and fix the problem. After moving the plane ... read more

11/9/08 This week started with a trip to Kumasi on Monday with the school’s soccer team to watch them play in the regional qualifying tournament. The school rented a benz-bus to transport the players and supporters to the games. The benz-bus is legally allowed to carry 27 people when it is completely full. We managed to squeeze 55 people onto the benz-bus for the hour and a half ride to Kumasi Girls SHS. If you do the math, that is an average of more than 2 people per seat. We literally looked like a clown car at the circus when everyone piled out of the bus. Luckily I got to ride in the front as the token white guy, where it wasn’t too crowded. The ride was not only extremely crammed, but also the noisiest ride ... read more
