Orphanage
Many of you have been very, very generous is sending packages to us and to distribute to the poor. Thank you, thank you. Here are pictures from the Abebech Gobena orphanage in Addis Ababa (www.agohelma.org.et) who is benefiting from your generosity. This orphanage is an impressively well run institution that not only takes care of orphans and vulnerable children, but has loads of women empowerment programs. The organization states that “Helping the children is not enough - we need to improve conditions so that women do not need to abandon or leave their children.” Makes sense. Among their many programs, every 6 months they run free training sessions for classes of 100 women. They prepare low-income women for housekeeping, food preparation, catering, nanny jobs and help them find employment.
The donations of the games - Etch a Sketch, Bowling Dice, crayons, jump ropes, puzzle cards - got particular enthusiastic responses. They were also appreciative of the pens, pencils, erasers, tape, body powder, anti-itch crème, purell, bug bite crème, etc. Thank you again.
Abebech KindergartenOver 35 kids in one kindergarten class. COnsidering Ethiopia averages 59 kids per class, this ratio isn't bad.

Ruta, these kids are so beautiful!
Ruta: My eyes are misty as I read your daily blog postings & think of the passion, courage & conviction that you & Tadas possess in taking on such an incredible year in the life of your family. The example you're setting for your children and for all of us, your family & friends, about putting your current life on hold and volunteering to help impoverished people in another country on another continent is tremendous. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can now say "Oh, I could never do that because I have ... (fill in the blank)" A career to advance? Kids in school? Young children who could never live in those circumstances? Teenagers who don't want to be pulled away from their friends? Expenses that have to be paid? Family I have to take care of? You have all of those and yet, you both made a personal choice for yourselves & your family to try to change the world one person (or family) at a time. That is truly an inspiring message to bear! And for our children to see your kids, whom they know & are the same age, writing about their daily life & how different it is from American life is just wonderful. So thank you for your inspiration and your selflessness. The Chunias family will be sending some supplies your way!
Your pictures are wonderful. I just want to give everyone hugs, including all of you!!!!
