Camel How To's
To understand how to get up on a camel, it is helpful to understand how a camel gets up!
The camel first gets into a kneeling position; then, the camel pushes up its strong back legs before finally straightening its front legs.
First of all, you have to be able to swing your legs over the camel's saddle with wooden posts protruding from the back and front of the saddle. Not an easy task for the vertically challenged with short legs around a tall and broad camel! For others it’s a piece of cake if you mount the camel at the front swinging your legs over the front post! Once you are in the saddle, lean back and as the camel rises lean slightly forward! Check out the video on getting on a camel!
To get off the camel, do everything in reverse! Don't forget to lean back otherwise you will end up going head first! Check out the video on getting down from a camel! Now you are ready to ride the camel.
Same principles apply when getting up and down on a camel when going up or down hills! Principle is one
thing, reality is another! Mama Canuck was too chicken to go downhill, but the rest of the Travelling Canucks are naturals!
Camel galloping is a whole other lesson for the more advanced! Sport bras for women and men's athletic support are highly recommended!
Great Times on Camels
Travelling Canucks had great times riding camels in Egypt! We went on two camel rides. The first one was along the Nile River on the West Bank of Luxor. Check out the blog titled: Camel Kisses and Snake Charmer Pinches. Our second camel ride was in Aswan through the desert on the West Bank. Check out the blog titled:Canucks on Camels, Feluccas and Motorboats!
If you ever get the chance, don't pass it up! Riding a camel is a blast! For those faint of heart, camel stew ain't bad!
No need to mention the fact that Mama Canuck was a little obsessed with photographing every camel we came across! Papa Canuck almost fell on his face when he jumped out of the van to get photos of the working camels on the outskirts of Giza. Well done Papa Canuck!
