After breakfast Evy and I walked out to the main road to get a taxi to go to Dahab City, which is a few km away from the seaside town. Within a few seconds a car passed us and honked, universal signal here for “Taxi ?”. Few of the taxis are marked here and you will never find a meter, so you need to know the price. Fortunately, this guy was fair and accepted the going rate without an argument. Dahab city is a bit of a disappointing place, with only a few low rise apartment buildings and little else. Near the post office, we found an ATM but still have a problem in that few of the ATMs in Egypt take our PC bank card, only our Bank of Montreal one. This is a bit ... read more

After breakfast at our hotel, Evy and I decided to go explore the town while Joshua and Benjamin relaxed at the hotel. Rather than follow the paved shoreline path, we walked out the driveway of our hotel and along to the main road. We seem to be one of the final hotels in the strip, so most of the town is in from us. We popped into a few of the stores to get an idea of prices for things like t-shirts. The store people here are not nearly as aggressive as they are in Luxor - the whole place seems to have a more laid back atmosphere. Towards where the main road finally reaches the seaside path, we found a store that was a post office of sorts, and managed to buy some stamps, but ... read more

About 5:30 it became light enough to see that we were on a highway with sandy dessert on one side, leading right up to the ocean with arid sandstone hills on the other side. By 6:45 we were at a place called Abu Zneima, which my map showed me was on the Sinai Peninsula, heading South toward Sharm El Sheik. This meant that the bus was not going the most direct route to Dahab and it seemed unlikely that we would be getting there at 9:00 am as promised. By 7 am we were at yet another police check point and we could see oil drilling platforms off in the distance on the ocean. We passed several oil tank farms and “Nodding Donkeys” - oil pumping machines which you also see in Alberta, Canada. By 8:40 ... read more

We left Luxor on a late night flight out of the local airport and arrived in Sharm El Shek around 11:30pm. We had arranged for a driver from our hotel to pick us up but he was no where too be found. So here we are, sitting at the local terminal at midnight in Sharm, Egypt trying to figure out how the hell we were going to get to Dahab (which was over an hour away). Luckily I was able to borrow the cell phone of a local, call our hotel and sort out the issue. After another 20 minutes a 25 year old guy showed up in his car saying he was our driver. So we load up our gear and head out. Just outside of the airport we turn off of the main road ... read more

For Thanksgiving we decided to take a hiatus from time-tested American traditions of eating things larger than your head and watching football, and instead scuba dive in the Red Sea. This adventure features Andy, Luke, Chelsea, Sarah, Kira (who, along with Sarah, didn't dive) and myself. We took the midnight bus to Dahab on Wednesday, which meant that we arrived in Dahab at 10:00am Thursday. Dahab is this wonderful town on the Red Sea coast of the Sinai peninsula that is essentially one (car-less) street along the coast with cafes on the ocean side and shops on the inland side. All of the cafes have basically the same food, and all have both tables and Bedouin-style short tables with mats and pillows so that you sit on the floor. There are many outlets offering diving services, ... read more

We had a leisurely start to the day, eating breakfast in the hotel restaurant next to its swimming pool - this was quite a lot more upmarket than previous hotels. A jeep took us along the coast to the "Blue Hole", Dahab's main snorkelling/diving spot. Yet more cafes surrounded the area with a rickety wooden bridge leading out over the coral to deposit people into deeper water. Instead of going in here, we walked further along to another spot where we slipped into the rather cold water and followed a guide along the edge of the coral back to the bridge. There were quite a lot of colourful fish, but I couldn't help but contrast it with Belize where there were just as many fish and also other marine life. We clambered out near the cafe ... read more

We started the day in grimy Aquba, bid a sad goodbye to those who were leaving us, and got on a grimy hydrofoil to Nuweiba in Egypt. The local passengers did not seem to be familiar with deoderant and the efforts of the crew to improve the atmosphere by spraying air freshener did little to help. After sitting for nearly two hours waiting for the ship to depart we sailed across the narrow gulf (a one and a half hour journey) to Nuweiba and extracted our baggage. I also got the remaining visa I needed, which seemed to be a lot more shiny than the ones stamped into other people's passports by their embassies. We took a bus down to Dahab, which turned out to be quite nice and laid back. I had my own room ... read more

Day 228 After an night fighting off the mozzies, we dropped off the laundry and headed to Funny Mummy for breakfast ahead our day one of our Advanced Diving Course. After a brief review by our instructor Mohammed we set off down to the lighthouse for Dive One: Navigation. We spent thirty minutes practicing our compass use on land (piece of cake!) and then geared up for our first dive in five months. Unfortunately, our compass navigation underwater is slightly more difficult than on land, I'm not sure whether I was counting finkicks or breathes, let alone where the bloody compass was pointing! Somehow we passed! We lazed around for an hour in the sun before our Second Dive: Naturalist. After a quick look at the Fish book we were confident we could name a few ... read more
