I'm afraid the party boats won the battle last night. They were crazy loud and kept me awake most of the night, despite the ear plugs, so I got up at 6:30 feeling pretty groggy. We called the desk and arranged to change rooms to the quiet (hopefully!) side of the building, so we packed up our things, and headed down for another good and filling breakfast. We met Hend at 8:30 am, and we were off to Memphis (not Tennessee! - the ancient capital of Egypt) and Saqqara. Today is the first day of the weekend (Friday and Saturday are the weekend here) and so the traffic was comparatively light. We got to Memphis in less than an hour. It was sunny and fairly hot (high of 33 or so) but it is not humid ... read more

When I was on my way to the metro to go to the pyramids a guy stopped me and said wow you look different where are you from? I said usa and he said his cousin lives in Minnesota. I was taken aback and decided to give this guy more of my time. He is the one who introduced me to Mohammed and also a tour company that sounded like it had a pretty good tour option. Again, I do not like tours, but being that I cant find shit and don’t know how to get places I decided to sign up for a tour. It would start by going to the desert in a few days as I wanted to hit up Alexandria for the library there before making my way down south. Unfortunately I ... read more

Still trying to figure out a route and what to do or what to skip in this country…why am I having trouble you ask? Mainly because I was not supposed to plan this part of the trip. I was supposed to be an accompanying passenger with a friend who didn’t make it over. So I didn’t look up any information about anything in Egypt expecting him to keep his word and bring the plan (including my own up to date guide book I lent him). Soooooooo off to the pyramids of Giza today to see what kind of shit can go wrong…Well….it was supposed to be a simple 1 Egyptian Pound (1/8th of a dollar) to ride the subway allllll the way to Giza (a suburb of Cairo) and then a simple ticket purchase to wander ... read more

This place is very hard….by that I mean it is a huge city, 25 million people. I am in downtown so everything looks the same and when there are street signs (which is not that often) I can’t read them anyways….AH!!! I did, however, pose a question for help within a Facebook group of world travelers. It was answered and I learned about World Wildlife Day and decided to go to the event to see what it was all about. I also got in touch with a dude who runs a desert survival school and another who does running and eskrima stuff (sword or stick fighting). Cool!!! There are many things to do! Yay! After downloading a map program that will show where the fuck I am without the internet I ventured off for a 35 ... read more

So my last night in Addis I got eaten alive by some bastard bed bugs….i was using my sleeping bag liner which has anti bug stuff in it but I didn’t cover my face so they bit me on my upper lip and below my lower one! Swelled up something fierce…and it itched a lot…goddamnit…oh well…looking like the elephant man never hurt anyone I suppose lol…so I arrived in Cairo around 01:30 and immediately felt the annoying touting Egypt is famous for…blurg…anyways…pushed past that to find my taxi and went to the heart of the city to meet a guy who took me through three alleys and up five flights of stairs to find my dorm bed…no idea where I am or what im doing…but…to add insult to injury some mozzies decided to have a go ... read more

We left Alexandria after three days and made the journey south to Cairo. It was delightfully uneventful as we motored down the wide and not crowded toll road. That alone was different, as so far our brief experiences in Lebanon and Egypt were far too many cars and far too few roads to accommodate them. Part of the reason for the somewhat empty toll road was that there was a two-lane highway to our right that all the trucks were driving on. This road did not have a toll. We wished that this was the case in the States. Now Cairo is one of the most densely populated capital cities in the world with 17 million people, ranking tenth, just behind New York City and the traffic certainly proved it. As we rode into the city ... read more

After a good night’s sleep, I met the Binkleys downstairs for breakfast. The buffet was elaborate with multicultural influences, more fruit and pastries than imaginable as well as a honeycomb station. I took some of the smoked salmon to the omelet cook and had him do scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and red onion. He surprised me when he lined a ring mold with the salmon, filled it with the egg and folded the salmon around the eggs for an elegant presentation. After breakfast Dave, Merry Jo and I lingered over coffee for a long time enjoying each others company. At 8 we met our guide and driver for the day of touring. Our guide was a very pleasant, knowledgeable woman named Hanon. It was funny that she wasn’t sure of the dynamic of our group. ... read more

As I sit here at 4:30 in the morning, jet lagged, exhausted, sore and discombobulated all I can think is “Dang, this trip is awesome so far.” It is Thursday morning, so I have been in Cairo for 2 full days. I am finally making time to sit, write and look back on the past several days. Since this is a written blog and I can’t do the cheesy television flashback music, swirling picture thing, so you will have to imagine that for yourself as we travel back to Sunday/Monday and the beginning of this adventure. The trip was uneventful until I reached London’s Heathrow airport. Due to bad weather and some confusion over where the plane was going to be de-iced at Washington Dulles, the flight was delayed over an hour and half. My connection ... read more

"Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one's lifetime." -Mark Twain So here we go for another life trip. This trip, as I have said about a few others, is one in which I have been dreaming of and planning in my mind for years and years. The Middle East is a region where there is never really a "good time" to visit as it is a place that is wrought with perpetual political and social turmoil to a greater or lesser extent. I had purchased our plane tickets in May arriving in Egypt and 3 weeks later departing Turkey, with plans to visit Greece and Jordan in between. At the time of purchase the region was somewhat stable, but since ... read more
