We had just returned from the rooftop pool. I threw my robe to the floor and collapsed onto the billowy white bed. I lie there in my shiny green bikini feeling so refreshed and comfortable. Then there was a pounding on the door. Having learned a thing or two about Middle Eastern modesty, I had the fleeting thought that I should probably cover myself before answering the door. Jeremy was too quick though. He swung the door open and was greeted by a 40-something, shy, Muslim hotel employee who announced, “Good evening, sir. I am here for your turn down service.” The man stepped inside, saw me lying scantily clad in bed and panicked. He put his eyes to the floor and said, “Oh sir, I am sorry. I am so sorry. I leave you.” “No! ... read more

*yawn* Last night was not an ideal sleep. I spent all night will terrible stomach cramps and this morning I keep running back and forward to the bathroom because im having a debate with my body... I don't want to spew, but it wants to. I just want these terrible stomach cramps to go away! I have a little bit of water left, so chow down some ammonia tablets because on the back it says it gives a fast effect of relieving stomach cramps... And all that other stuff. Im really hoping it just stops me from spewing! Ya know, I thought because I'm a tough kiwi girl I could have handled this awesome Egyptian food! I head downstairs and have a cup of tea with Kai and Shantelle, grab some water and head back upstairs ... read more

This morning I awoke at 9.30am, angry at myself that I had slept in so late I promptly get up, open my windows and head towards the shower. Damn these fricken itchy bites, where the hell did I get them from! I have two on my back, three on each arm. I head to Erenis room to see if she's keen to get some breakfast, She's already eaten so I head on down myself. She tells me Tilly (a girl on our tour, that has done one of Ereni's tours before) is already downstairs, she's in blue. Once in the restaurant I see girl in blue with other girls from Contiki, so sit with them and have some laughs. Contiki is like Busabouts sister company, so they go to all the same hotels and all that. ... read more

Last nights sleep was a bit broken up, I managed to get to sleep at 9.30pm, woke up gasping for air about 12.30am, turned the aircon on after beating my top score in Subway surfer (yeah that's right Rory, Im insane lol) and fell asleep about 3am. I'm finding it difficult on drift off to sleep with all the honking. I tell you what, I now know why they made the rule in nz that your not allowed to honk between 7pm and 7am lol. Anyway, I wake at 8.30am, as I'm lying there deciding whether to get up now or wait closer till 11am (meant to be meeting tour guide) I hear someone unlocking my door, for those of you that know me, I fright very easily when this sort of thing happens, so what ... read more

My flight was good, I sat next to a lovely Arabic gentleman that was coming back to Egypt to visit his family, he was from the USA. He gave me some very good tips e.g don't go in a cab by yourself, because of rape. Awesome! Lol. However, he said if you sit in the back your fine. He also taught me some basic words, I wrote them on my hand the way i could easily read and pronounce them as closely to the correct way as possible. It's a little bit funny. Hello I wrote as Hababa, thank you is shakran, no is lah, yes is nam. The other passenger beside him was also lovely. He was a minister, and because I rode shotgun (window seat). He asked me many times to take photos out ... read more

Flight: Our flight from Vancouver left a few minutes late but no problems since we had a 5 hour wait in Heathrow so there were no scheduling problems. Watched 3 B- grade movies and did Sudoku. At Heathrow I window shopped and kept looking for wheat-free snacks while Ross did editing work. I was able to find peanuts, potato chips and cappuccinos. Good healthy start. London to Cairo was 4 hours and I was able to sleep for maybe 30 minutes. We arrived at midnight and by the time we got to the hotel and into our room it was 1:30 am Wed. Ross zonked out right away but I kept hearing the traffic, the music and big city noise until 4:30 am and then I fell asleep until our 6:00 am courtesy wake-up ... read more

Well we have completed our desert mission and done our first meaty travelling across Egypt. Siwa was great, totally different from Cairo, small, dusty, hot and as many donkey and carts as pickup trucks. We had a relaxing trip milling around the town on foot and battered pushbikes, ate plenty of nice food (especially fire grilled chicken) and drank a lorra lorra water. The highlight of the trip was an excursion by jeep into the desert where we saw dunes as you'd want them to be and were scared (me more than Alice) by some very fast, very steep descents of dunes 40+ metres high in the Landcruiser. We slept out by a fire under a million stars and woke up cold, damp and mosquito ravaged but pleased to have seen the edge of the sea ... read more

Started off early this morning to get to Giza to see the pyramids. Arranged a taxi from our hotel but think we got stung as cost us $50 to get there and back. Once at Giza you realise how strange it is to be standing at the gate to the dessert with thousands of years of history in front of you and a KFC behind you :) decided to make our own way round the Giza area but got hassled every step of the way to buy souvenirs, have our pictures with a camel (for a fee of course) & have a guide (though of course everyone says they are not a guide and are only trying to help you then they ask you for money for providing information that is quite easily worked out yourself!!) ... read more

Egypt - Cairo October 13 and 14th When we had decided to visit Jordan and Egypt we had decided that we would go the route of two different tour companies and we were far from disappointed. Actually both of the companies, their guides, drivers, office staff and meet and greet people far exceeded any of our expectations. Two tall blonde women travelling in these countries, we kind of stuck out, and we were treated with respect and welcomed with warmth, great hospitality and service. Would go back in a heartbeat and would strongly recommend visiting these countries and these companies and doing some individual research when making choices. We found the companies through research of different Tourism Boards and various sites that have posted reviews for these countries. We read lots of travel books and nailed ... read more

Day 2 – Cairo, Egypt 9/2/12 Today was great in Cairo. The tour group met in the main lobby for breakfast before we headed out to the pyramids. The breakfast was buffet style and had lots of falafel! We had our breakfast, coffee and juice and headed to the great pyramids of Giza. When we arrived at the pyramids, there were lots of people there trying to sell us things immediately. Our tour guide told us to be firm with them and to keep saying no, because we can get better deals when we go to Luxor and Aswan, which we will be doing tomorrow. The guys were very pushy and were actually kind of annoying, but we were successful at not buying anything. The area was surrounded by camels, men in long shirts (for lack ... read more
