My recently-proposed-to fiancee Aleks and I decided that we would take our first big trip together, and we chose one of my dream destinations - Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe. Although the Falls were amazing we decided that with a full week at our disposal, that an overnight safari to Chobe National Park in Botswana would be equally amazing. A daytime boat ride introduced us to the park, where we saw hippos, elephants and all kinds of birds. Later in the day we toured around on land and saw lots of monkeys, giraffes and a chance encounter with a lion. But the best encounter was yet to come. When we had set off there was scant information provided to us about this tour, but we had assumed that we would be staying in some sort of building ... read more

We arrived last Saturday- took a whopping 30 hours to get here, but all in all it wasn't bad. Plane itenerary changed a bit from what we orginially thought, but it was interesting! We went from Columbus to Atlanta, Atlanta to Dakar, Senegal, Senegal to Jo-burg, South Africa and then Jo-Burg to Gaborone....landed at night- which was cool... :) Palm trees, dust, stone and desolation. It's really strange here- but not strange "bad"...just strange. It was exactly what I was expecting, yet not at all what I had expected. Wow- that was really weird. lol. ;) Anyway- I thought it would be a bigger city, but in reality it's just a few malls and then about 5 miles from the malls there are government buildings- that's it. Very different from what my imagination had in mind. ... read more

We arrived in Chobe and were soon on our first game drive which started early doors at 6am! It was freeeeeeeezing! We had one sleeping bag between all of us and i'd like to say it was worth it but, frankly there were no animals at all for a good 2.5 hrs! This is a place with over 70,000 elephants...how do you hide that many elephants?! However, just as were about to leave we heard some impala braying and so headed down to the river bank. Here we managed to see a leopard dragging an impala into some bushes! We narrowly missed the kill as it nailed the impala while it was taking a leisurely drink at the river! In order to get a better look we were all climbing about the van and then while ... read more

After my daring jumps from the Vic Falls bridge we headed from Zambia into Botswana. The border of these two countries is the Zambezi River. This is the only border crossing in Africa where you can take pictures. We left Zambia and boarded a small ferry to cross the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers into Botswana. The two rivers converge at the crossing before heading for the gorge and Victoria Falls. We ended up leaving our truck on the other side as the ferries had a "breakdown of service" meaning it couldn't get across for a few hours. So with little money in our pockets we took taxis into town and then to the campsite. We arrived at the campsite still without a truck so we headed for the sunset cruise hoping our sleeping bags, tents and ... read more

We arrived in Botswana on Saturday afternoon. The border crossing was considerably faster and less annoying than into Namibia, where the customs officers acted as though we were inconveniencing them, plus most of them fled on their lunch breaks as soon as we arrived. Botswana is an interesting place, with one of the most stable, legitimate goverments, and strongest economies in Africa. We're currently in Maun, one of the main entry points to the Okavango Delta, and it's a nice little place. We left Swakopmund last Monday morning, after we heard all the tales of the skydiving and other adventure sports. I went on a township tour with a few people on Sunday afternoon, and it was really interesting. It's quite a hard life for a lot of the people, but our guides were saying that ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-East » Francistown June 9th 2008

What a week! After orientating ourselves to Francistown on Wednesday, we started our placements in the hospital on Thursday morning (at 7.30am! That was the first culture shock). Anna and I began in A&E, while Fiona and Jemma went to Obs and Gynae. The hospital wasn't quite what we were expecting. We thought it would be a lot better equipped and more Westernized than it really is. The A&E department is exactly what you would expect from an African hospital - full of people, dirty, people lying on trolleys, 2 beds to a cubicle etc. We saw a big range of conditions over the two days there before the weekend - miscarriages, lots of HIV/AIDS, road accidents, children with AIDS and awful infections, TB and quite a lot of trauma. The main cases that have stuck ... read more

Well we made it safely to Francistown!! We spent yesterday just wandering in the centre of Gaborone and took some pictures of the Parliament building etc, but nothing too hardcore touristy as we were still recovering from travelling! It's a nice enough city, but we all got the impression it has been very quickly purpose built and is definitely not a top tourist destination! In fact we ended up in a government office for the Department of Tourism getting some information on buses to Francistown etc as the tourist board was too difficult to find! We had our first experience of "combis" (minibus taxis you flag down, cram into no matter how many people are already in there and shout when you want to get off) and successfully managed to get back to our accommodation without ... read more

Africa » Botswana » South-East » Gaborone June 2nd 2008

Hi everyone! We have finally made it to Gaborone (Capitol of Botswana) after a very long journey - over 12 hours on planes, 7 hours in a bus and a couple of interesting taxi rides! We're spending the day here today before moving on up to Francistown tomorrow morning. Our hostel here is lovely and exactly what you'd expect to see in Africa. We slept for about 12 hours last night, which the hostel owners found quite entertaining. Everyone's feeling refreshed today though. We're just getting our bearings today and will write more when we have something more interesting to say! Lots of love, JAFA xox P.S. Weather is fab! P.P.S. My handwipes leaked all over my phone and it has died! Sim is OK but have no numbers - oops! So I'm not being rude ... read more

A birthday to remember We're writing this retrospectively now! Over a month has passed since I celebrated my 31st birthday in Botswana. After going on our fantastic safari to Savuti, we came back to Maun to spend a couple of days with Mr James Gifford. It was great to see Giff in his element out in Botswana and we got to meet lots of the expat community. We also managed to go on a mokoro trip in the Eastern delta which isn't supposed to be as wildlife rich as other parts of the delta, but we still managed to see elephants and hippos. Give you are in this tiny canoe, about 1 inch out of the water, a bunch of hippos scrambling off the bank to protect their young was a little un-nerving. We also did ... read more
