Botswana… As a lover of all things African wildlife I have heard stories and wanted to visit Northern Botswana for years… Northern Botswana did not disappoint and delivered a very “basic” safari/camping experience. The country of Botswana manages tourism tightly and has pushed prices up, to limit the volume of tourists… this means more money for them, and more pristine habitat for animals and humans alike. While this approach helps keep the numbers low, it makes it harder for those on a budget so for this go round we joined a group of 9 others for a camping safari. The campsites were ultra basic, basically a designated spot in the woods with no running water or facilities of any type and we would pitch tents, cook over an open campfire and provide free fertilizer to the ... read more

It has been such a long time since I’ve written a blog. I’ve spent time writing in my journal and a few other scribbles here and there, but have missed connecting with all of you back home through the blog. The second year of service has its own set of challenges and rewards. Some of the challenges for me have been in the process of accepting that my impact seems to be smaller in scope than I first thought. I knew coming in that working in behavior change is a slow, uneven, and often mysterious process. As individuals, our capacity for change and the timing of that change is very unique. I think it is only magnified when looking at societal change. I know that I am making some differences one individual at a time, and ... read more

After spending a few days in Maun getting ourselves organised and the Land rover fixed ready for our trip through the centre of Botswana, 550 miles through Moremi, Savuti and Chobe. We would spend 8 nights travelling through these areas which can only be described as wilderness areas. They are all national parks with lots of game and very rough 4 by 4 tracks, but no food, water or petrol so we had to pack all our supplies, plus extras in case we hit any problems. So we did all this…but nothing can prepare you for what it was like, there were some days where we did not see another car which is bit concerning when you are driving through water that covers the bonnet of the land rover, you knew if you got stuck or ... read more

Along the Khwai RiverWe were up at 5:00 AM, had a light breakfast and away at 6:15 for a morning game drive around the Khwai River area. Chris was determined to see Leopard but no luck. However we came close to 2 very large bull elephants, lots of impala and the lilac breasted roller (Botswana's National Bird) was photographed by all our 12 cameras (but alas no video - sniff, sniff). Returning to camp to wait out the hot afternoon, we tried to lie down in the tents but it was simply too hot (40+ C again). So like the lions, we lounged in the shade. A second game drive started at 4:00 PM and ended at sundown on a beautiful riverside hippo pool on the Khwai River. Four big hippos watched us from close range. ... read more

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - NOT! The Third Bridge Lion Pride kept us entertained for a few days. Last night, when the females had killed the buffalo and the pride was starting to feed, we noticed them looking off into the night as though expecting someone. The two male lions in this pride were somewhere in the dark and we knew they would be along any time. Obviously they were expected. During the night, we heard much fighting, roaring, and at one point the lions charged right through camp chasing off the hyenas. In the morning, after an early breakfast, we headed over to the kill to see what was happening. The pride had been feeding all night and were lounging around on the road. One of the dominant males was nearby. Shortly after we arrived, ... read more

Entertainment - Lion StyleWaking up revealed new lion stories from overnight. In the middle of the night, Joel got up to pee, unzipped his tent door and was a few steps outside his tent when he discovered lions sleeping around our campfire, about 10 metres away. When one big male looked right at him, he decided to wait for morning, backed slowly into the tent and zipped up the tent door. Chris had told us that unlike bears in Canada, lions will not disturb you if you are in an enclosed tent. They see it as a solid object. This gave some of us a tiny degree of comfort, but miracle of miracles it turned out to be true. However, we were also told 'never turn your back and run from a lion' because then you ... read more

Ultimate Safari Day. For those of you who don't want to read the whole blog, skip to the part below, starting with Lions. Up early this morning, which would be our pattern for the rest of our days on safari. Breakfast buffet at the hotel, load up the luggage on a cart that is pulled behind the safari vehicle. Glad we brought duffle bags ined with orange garbage bags. Most everyone else has regular luggage, and it would get pretty beat up and dusty over the next days, to be sure. This was a mobile camping safari, meaning that our camp moved with us from place to place. We would be staying in privately-booked special group campsites, so all on our own. It was nice to learn that we would not be staying in any public ... read more

Moremi Game Drive Today was a big day, starting at 6:30 am and ending at 6:30 pm tonight. We hopped into Backpackers safari vehicle and headed for Moremi Game Reserve. Before even entering the park, we sighted two elephant under a distant acacia tree. It turned out to be our only viewing of these elusive animals, except for their distinct "loaves of bread" left everywhere on the road. Kayla would really like to meet the animals responsible for baking such large & abundant "Loaves of bread". Our driver & guide, "Ice" (really his middle name), took us first along the marshes bordering the water passages of the Okavango Delta. He knew just where to look for all the game, and the fun really started here - antelope, impala everywhere we went, slow-moving giraffe. Hippos, both in ... read more

Gabriel arrived at camp looking exhausted, but with adrenalin still clearly pumping. He briefly confirmed what Femke had already radio-ed in. The two of them had spent the night with a newly-identified pride of lion and wanted to collar the “matriarch” lioness as part of their research into large predator interactions. Anne-Lise - somehow, despite the early hour, already bright-eyed and chicly turned out, albeit in a practical bush manner (as you might expect of the French in Africa) - went off to prepare her drug and dart supplies with Louis’s help, while Gabriel made sandwiches for his starving colleague and himself. Meanwhile, Andrew co-ordinated vehicles and personnel; would we like to come along? Pope. Catholic. If I could have bitten his hand off - and if there had been any point - I would. Ok people, so technically, I'm home now, but I had to blog on Maun/Moremi Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta experience. :) SOrry for the delay...Botswana isn't great about having internet connection. I did want to blog this specific experience because it was CRAZY! (Yes, I made it home safely...thanks!) ;) This was from my diary/journal...minus a few details. :) The trip to Maun began Saturday after breakfast. Lasole (our guide throughout the program) had teased us saying that we were taking the combie to Maun (which is 13 hours away, mind you)...I thought- ok, this is going to be one hell of a trip. YIKES. Combies are NOT comfortable...they magnify every pot hole/bump and although it's nice to take one thru town or thru Old Naledi, 13 hours would have been INTOLERABLE. Luckily enough, he ... read more
