Background: Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. Mineral extraction, principally diamond mining, dominates economic activity, though tourism is a growing sector due to the country's conservation practices and extensive nature preserves. Botswana has one of the world's highest known rates of HIV/AIDS infection, but also one of Africa's most progressive and comprehensive programs for dealing with the disease.

Old Road
The old road runs next to the new Trans-Kalahari Highway

Midmorning we departed from Johannesburg to Kang in Botswana with a Pajero and two Landies. Kang is a small village along the Trans-Kalahari Highway. Due to donkeys and cattle on the road, it is not advisable to drive at night. We decided to stay over at the Kang Ultra-Stop Filling Station (+267 6517294) (S23 40.921 E22 45.999) that offers a range of diffrent types of accommodation at a range of prices. Credit cards are generally accepted but my Master Card did not work, so it was useful to have cash (South African Rand) available to pay for the petrol and accommodation. [View Full Entry]

Hi all,Well it has been quite a while since I have written and quite a lot has happened. The highlight obviously being that we got to see almost everyone we know in Toronto, and well as many others from around the country and world who gathered in the city for my sister's wedding.
