We have now been in our new home of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico for almost 2 weeks. We desperately needed to rest and have tried to pace ourselves after our 2 week drive from Costa Rica. When we move to a new town there is always plenty to keep busy with just finding markets, banks, malls, etc. and just generally learning all of the new streets. Merida is a huge city and has a great abundance of all so we spent some time searching for the necessities that best suited our needs. It has also taken some time to get used to our new house. We live in a restored adobe house about 5 blocks from the Merida’s Gran Plaza and about 4 blocks from Santiago Plaza. The roads are wide and straight and are logically numbered ... read more

For those who follow our travels, you know that we recently made our longest move of the trip so far. We moved from Heredia, Costa Rica to Merida, Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. It was a drive of just over 1350 miles and took us through 5 countries. We traveled through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize before reaching Mexico. We estimated that it would take us about 12 days with a couple of rest stops in Copan Ruinas, Honduras and Belize. We wanted to see the Mayan Ruins at Copan and stop for a time to visit Belize, which was the only Central American country we hadn’t visited on this trip. We thought our checkout day from our last apartment was the 10th of August. We asked the landlady on the afternoon of the ... read more

We are nearing the end of our month long visit to Costa Rica. It is our 5th country and 6th move in 6 months. Costa Rica is the most touristy and most expensive country (by far) that we have lived in during our time in Central America. Apartments, groceries, and entertainment are nearly double what they have been in other countries. The tourist infrastructure is much better developed here and, because of the number of tourists, they are able to, and do, charge more money for things. Costa Rica has many beautiful areas but at times it seems like an adventurous traveler could find the same things in other Central American countries for much less money. Costa Rica does have friendly people who all seem to speak some English and it does feel “safer” than some ... read more

We’ve been in Costa Rica for about two weeks. I don’t think we did a lot, but we have done a few things. We left Panama City early last Tuesday morning. We wanted to drive as close to the Panama/Costa Rica border, spend the night in David, and drive on to our new home in Heredia, Costa Rica, just north of San Jose. Because McDonald’s was closed early Wednesday morning, we couldn’t get our morning coffee. We should have taken that as an omen. We thought that, since we were going through the same border, it would be easy. Not so! We got to the Panama border at 8 and it was about 10:30 before we were finally done. 2 ½ hours to go through Panama – the time we budgeted for going through both Panama ... read more

We have officially been on the road for one year! Since we had Mike down for the previous week and saw a flurry of sights, we decided to take the road less travelled. Tuesday morning we took a drive back to Colon on the Caribbean and then northwest to Fort Lorenzo. We originally intended to do this part of the trip when we went to Portobelo, but something happened to our car and we couldn’t go. The map took us over a one-lane bridge near the Gatun Locks at the entrance to the Panama Canal. We were stopped at a red light with a lot of other vehicles. The light changed and it was our turn. I have never seen a lock gate from this angle before. It was quite massive. I looked up and I ... read more

We have had a whirlwind of activity in our first 2 weeks in Panama City. After an easy drive down the Pan American highway from Boquete, Panama we arrived at our new house in Panama City. Actually our house is a 25 story condominium, our first high-rise on our journey so far. We live on the 18th floor and have a very nice 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms and all the amenities. Mike was coming to visit and we decided to enjoy a little luxury to celebrate our 1 year anniversary of our travels. However, there’s no rest for the weary here. We had to get out in town and learn our way around so we would be ready when Mike arrived. Panama City is a huge, beautiful town of more than 800,000 set on ... read more

We are now getting into the last few days in Boquete, Panama. It’s been a good visit to a small town in the mountains. It is now the rainy season in Central America and if you like rain, Boquete is the place for you. It rains nearly every day here. A lot of rain; literally 2-3 inches every day. We looked up weather statistics for Boquete and it is common to get 30 to 40 inches of rain in a month here. Every afternoon by 3 the clouds roll over the volcano and up the valley. Because the weather often knocks out internet, TV and even electricity we have spent quite a few nights sitting on our balcony and enjoying the unbelievable lightning storms. After a week of staying around the house watching the rain we ... read more

We thought we didn’t do much since the last time we wrote, but in retrospect we did quite a bit! Wednesday we hiked Sendero El Pianista (Pianist Trail). El Pianista is “a pleasant day hike through dairy land and into humid cloud forest”. There was just one thing keeping us from the hike and that was crossing a small river. It had to be pretty easy; there was a whole family that lived on the other side. When we got to the river, there was an old man trying to fix a bridge. His idea of a bridge and mine differed vastly! While my idea had at least two pieces of wood tied together with rope, he was installing a too-short “I” beam and rocks. He helped me along for a couple of steps, then I ... read more

After a long, two day drive from Granada, Nicaragua, we are now in Boquete, Panama. Boquete is a small mountain town near Baru Volcano in northwestern Panama; in fact, the only volcano in Panama. Boquete is popular with expats from many countries and is hugely different from the colonial towns we have stayed in on our trip so far. The drive from Granada was not terrible even though it took two days. It was about 2 hours from Granada to the Costa Rican border. The border people from Costa Rica seemed surprised that we weren’t going to stay in their country. I don’t think they had ever had anyone pass through Costa Rica to get to Panama. It seemed like it hurt their feelings and they weren’t sure how to do the paperwork. We enjoyed the ... read more

I find myself wanting to come clean to everybody who reads my blog. After all, honesty is the best policy. But, before I come clean with this faux pas, there are a couple more things for which I must come clean. Ready? DAVID WROTE THE LAST FIVE BLOGS. I had been getting burned out writing every couple of weeks. David volunteered to take over. He liked it so much, he wrote the next blog. And the next blog. I have become a lady of leisure! It has been a nice break, but I promise that I’m back and will continue to write. David may still write; we’ll figure that out when it happens. I MISS HOLDING BABIES.
