A beautiful sunny day, so I headed to the coast. I have been meaning to visit Yantian Boardwalk for a while, but I've either been busy or the weather has been terrible. It was really easy to get to, taking line 2 to Haishan Station and then a straight walk down the road to the water. There were quite a few people at the entrance to the boardwalk and here the boardwalk juts out into the water more, so lots of people were there taking photos. There was even a wedding shoot going on. There was a cute looking café/restaurant there too. I could just imagine sitting in the shade of its terrace and enjoying an iced coffee there. The entrance to the board walk was kind of in the middle, so I had to decide ... read more

Another weekend, another part of Shenzhen to explore. Today it was the turn of Minzhi, which is situated in Longhua district. I don't think I've been to Longhua before, maybe to an art gallery, but I'm really not sure. I was shocked when I came out of Minzhi subway station to see how busy it was. I know it was a Saturday evening, but I didn't expect there to be so many people about. Another sign that Covid is well and truly over. We headed down the packed main street and into one of the urban villages nearby. One of the guys was telling me that during Covid all these villages were locked up and if you didn't live there you couldn't enter. Now we were able to freely wander the streets. We wandered the backstreets, ... read more

Since I'd been feeling a bit under the weather, a nice and easy relaxing stroll/hike was what I needed and Bijiashan Park fitted the bill nicely. It was a short hop on the subway and and about a ten minute or so walk from the subway to the park's (east?) entrance. I passed an abandoned apartment complex that was getting ready for demolition, I would have loved to have had a look around and get some photos, but it was all boarded up and there were a few security guards looking after the place. At the entrance there were lots of nicely shaded places for people to sit and relax. I had read that there was a small hill to hike which offered some views of the city, so I followed the signposts for that. I ... read more

Took the subway to Chiwan again, this place is becoming like a second home to me. However, from the subway I headed off in a different direction. It was about a twenty minute walk or so to my first destination. The only thing of interest that I passed on the way was Tianhou Palace. I had thought about visiting, but there were only two reviews online (in Chinese) one that gave it a 5* review and the other gave it 1*. To be honest, it didn't look very open or inviting, so I nixed that idea for my return journey to the subway station. I arrived at the entrance to the tomb of Zhao Bing, who was the last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and it is the only royal tomb in Guangdong Province. ... read more

Exploring another area of Shenzhen. Baoan is pretty far from where I live but new subway lines have made it more accessible and slashed travel times. We started at Baoan Farmers Trade Wholesale Market (that's the translation of the name, which is why it sounds a little strange). The market was really big, bigger than I imagined it would be. We started in the outer ring, which was filled with shops selling dry good such as rice, spices, cured meats and fruits and veggies. Since it was the afternoon, it was pretty quiet. Because the market is in Shenzhen, it's a bit more high tech as each vendor had a tv screen outside their store that displays what I think was their prices. After walking the outer ring, we headed into the centre of the market ... read more

I took the subway to Chiwan again, this time to make my way to Chiwan left Fort Park. It's pretty close to Wen Tianxiang Memorial Park, which I went to a few days previously. If I had know, I probably should have visited them together, but never mind. It was about a twenty minute walk to the park. My map app directed me up the stairs I had seen on my previous visit and then it was pretty much just go in a straight line. I think the route skirted the edge of the other park. I was quite surprised that there was no actual path, so I had to walk on the road and the well trodden path on the grass. The road was quite apart from the odd few lorries coming along it. If ... read more

Nanshan Museum had been on my radar for a while, but when I tried to get tickets in Covid times, there were never any available. Now that's over it was super easy to reserve a spot on the museum's WeChat mini programme. The museum was easy to access as it was about a ten minute walk in a straight line from the subway station. I scanned my ticket at the entrance and was free to wander the museum. I don't really know too much about this area of Shenzhen apart from it is central and pretty rich. The museum had both permanent and temporary exhibits, so I started with permanent ones. I decided to work through them chronologically so started with 'Ancient Nanshan'. I passed a gorgeous wooden folding screen with gold lacquer work as I ... read more

I headed to Wen Tianxiang Memorial Park, which is located in Chiwan. It wasn't too far of a walk from the subway station, about ten to fifteen minutes. I actually missed the entrance to the park the first time as there was a gate across it and some guards sitting at a table, so I thought it was some kind of private business. The park is dedicated to Wen Tianxiang, who was a poet and politician during the late Southern Song Dynasty in the thirteenth century. He is best known as a patriot and martyr for his resistance to Kublai Khan's invasion of the Southern Song Dynasty and for being captured and tortured for refusing to yield to the Yuan Dynasty. I had seen some pictures of the park online and it looked quite nice and ... read more

I spent the second part of my lunar new year holiday in Hubei visiting friends. Since all Covid restrictions had been lifted recently it was still a novelty to be able to travel hassle free. However, this trip didn't go as planned but that due to my Chinese friends lack of planning and last minute changes rather than any major events. I had intended to spend all my time in Wuhan but ended up spending the majority of it in Huangshi, a smaller city nearby that is my friend's hometown. I think Huangshi's only claim to fame is that it was the second or third city to get shut down back in January 2020 when Covid started becoming more prominent. Anyway, I've broke the trip into a few different sections. Transport: I flew to Wuhan with ... read more

Today I was heading to Huouhai. This is the place that I had originally wanted to stay, but the place I had wanted to stay had sold out by the time I got round to booking it and the other places I looked at were more expensive and not as nice looking as the hotel I am staying in now. After a leisurely breakfast, I headed out to the bus stop. It was bit of a chew on to get to Houhai and involved changing buses. The first bus was really quiet with only a few passengers and we drove through some small villages. I got off in what felt like the middle of nowhere and headed over the road to the where I would catch the other bus from. You know that a place isn't ... read more
