Woke up to a cool, but glorious morning. The sun is shining and the sky is clear, a perfect day for touring Yellowstone National Park. We stopped last night in Wapiti, WY at Green Creek RV Park . It was a small, but clean park and it had this very unusual structure at the top of one of the hills on the property. It looked like a cross between a castle and a pagoda. Someone had obviously put a lot of time into it, but it was never completed. Ray later inquired about it and was told is is called The Smith Mansion. It was never completed because the builder fell to his death while building it. After setting up, Raymond went to do laundry while I made potato salad to go with dinner. We had our cocktails and dinner and then things started to look threatening again. The guys just made it back to their RV when the skies opened up. We had the sound of the driving rain for quite a while and commented that we were lucky that it waited until now and not when we were hooking up the RV's. We all slept peacefully and were on
the road again at 8:00 . The drive was so very beautiful with vistas at every turn. There were majestic mountains along with lush and green valleys. As we climbed in elevation we saw more snow, not only on the mountain tops, but along the road. At around 10,000 feet we were in snow fog, which seriously curtailed visibility. It was not pleasant on the windy roads. It remained that way until be hit Fishing Bridge, where we stopped to grab a hot chocolate and stretch our legs a bit before heading on. Tonight I am having a guest blogger take my place. Tom volunteered to take over.
As a guest newbie blogger, here is my recap of today. Left Wapiti and drove into Yellowstone to be greeted with lots of dense fog from the snow on the ground. Also experienced a noticeable drop in temps at the higher elevations. First stop was Sulfur Mud Springs and saw Dragon's Breath. We noted how the mud waves were ebbing and flowing. Visited Upper and Lower Falls with vast amounts of water as the snow melt continues. Elevation was up to 7,800' and some road closures are still in effect. Yellowstone
is approximately 3,468 square miles and almost 2,168,000 acres - just amazing wildlife (bison particularly) and natural beauty everywhere one looks.
I'm back. Today we did the Northern side of the park with all of the above and Mammoth Hot Springs, Surprisingly, some areas of the park are pretty busy. They say is is a real s..t show here in the summer months with crazy traffic throughout the park. Tomorrow we are renting a car and doing the southern part, and what ever else we were not able to see today. We are spending tonight and tomorrow at Buffalo Crossing RV Park in West Yellowstone. It is conveniently located close to the downtown area, and a stones throw from the parks West gate entrance. Ray is already lamenting about having to walk four blocks tomorrow morning to pick up the rental car. Better get him to bed early! Signing off for now.
Total to date: 1198 miles
Animal sightings: Loads of Buffalo, many deer, 1 jack rabbit, horses
